Wake Forest Drops Friday Contest to North Carolina

9/22/2023 7:37:00 PM | Field Hockey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 17 Wake Forest field hockey team fell to the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels 3-0 on Friday evening at Kentner Field.

Wake Forest (3-3, 0-1 ACC) strung together seven shots in the contest, with six on goal against the Tar Heels (6-1, 2-0 ACC).

Sophomore goalkeeper Ellie Todd matched her season-high of six saves with three coming in the first 15 minutes to keep things scoreless after 15 minutes of play.

Freshmen Georgia Leary and Mia Schoenbeck both recorded a pair of shots to lead the Deacon attack while the trio of senior Grace Delmotte, freshman Faye Janse and graduate Nat Friedman each recorded one shot for Wake Forest.

How It Happened

  • Todd recorded her first save off a UNC corner with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter of action.
  • Despite the Tar Heels earning three corners, Wake Forest kept things scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play.
  • Leary ripped a pair of shots, forcing the UNC keeper into back-to-back saves for the Deacs first offensive threat of the evening midway through the second quarter.
  • UNC broke the stalemate with 3:32 left before half as Katie Dixon netted her second goal of the season to give the Tar Heels the advantage at the break.
  • Wake threatened again earning a corner with nine minutes left in the third quarter
    • Schoenbeck and Friedman forced shots on frame that were saved by Carolina.
  • The Tar Heels extended their lead netting a pair of goals with under two minutes left in the match to claim a 3-0 win.

Quotables
"Carolina will be clinical with their execution. If we try to play individual defense like that, it's troublesome. That was the difference in the game. We didn't get numbers around the ball, so we'll look to clean that up on Sunday. We're super proud of our girls. We had opportunities in our corner defense. Our corner defense played brillant. I was really happy with our transition to put the ball back into an attacking position. We had few opportunities but with the opportunities we did have, I was proud of how we tried to execute and put the ball in the back of the cage." - head coach Jen Averill
