This is the first win of the 2023-24 season for the Deacs.
NORMAN, Okla. - The Wake Forest women's golf team won the Schooner Classic at Belmar Golf Club by an impressive 22 strokes. The Deacs had three players finish inside the top six.
The Deacs' victory margin is the largest since the spring of 2021 when they won the Palmetto Intercollegiate by 28 strokes. Their to-par score of -29 is the fourth-lowest 54-hole score to par in program history. The team's 54-hole score of 811 is the lowest 54-hole team score in program history, besting the 819 54-hole team score from the UCF Challenge in the spring of 2022.
The veteran trio of graduate Rachel Kuehn, senior Mimi Rhodes and junior Carolina Chacarra led the way for the Deacs, as they all finished inside the top six, in a tie for third, and just two strokes off the winner at nine-under. All three players had three rounds of even or under par scores that led to their seven-under 54-hole scores of 203.
With a seven-under finish at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate last week, all six rounds of Rhodes' senior season so far have been even or under par. Five of Chacarra's six rounds have been even or under par and four of Kuehn's six have been even or under. For Rhodes, her 54-hole score of 203 is a career best. Kuehn tied her career best with her 203 and Chacarra's 203 is the second-best of her collegiate career.
Freshmen Macy Pate and Brooke Rives both finished with 54-hole scores of two-under 208 for top-25 finishes, coming in tied for 25th in the 84-player field. Five of Pate's six collegiate rounds so far have been even or under par. Four of Rivers' six collegiate rounds have been even or under. Both players' score of 208 is a collegiate best.
Coach's Comments
"This is the first time we have played in this event, and it was a wonderful experience at a great course. We all played this week with immense gratitude and in honor of Toby Keith's Foundation mission for the OK Kids Korral.
This week was an all-around team effort from every player. They all had some outstanding moments. We have a quick turnaround to the Windy City Classic but are looking forward to competing again and keeping this momentum going. Go Deacs!" - head coach Kim Lewellen
Next Up
The Deacs will continue fall play Monday, October 2, and Tuesday, October 3, at the Windy City Classic, hosted by Northwestern at the Glen View Club.
