
No. 25 Demon Deacons Start their Season at the Sahalee Players Championship

Nationally-ranked Wake Forest is set to compete in the first Sahalee Players Championship since 2019.
Sammamish, Wa.- The No. 25 Wake Forest Men's Golf team will head to the Sahalee Players Championship from Saturday, Sept. 9 to Sunday, Sept, 10 at Sahalee Country Club.
The Sahalee Players Championship will be played as a collegiate event for the first time in 2023 in collaboration with the University of Washington. Prior to the shift this year, the tournament was formerly an individual elite amateur tournament from 1992-2019.
Head Coach Jerry Haas led the Demon Deacons to another historic year in 2023. Under the leadership of Hass, the Deacs went to their second-straight ACC Championship this past season. 2023 ACC Individual Champion, Michael Brennan returns as well to help lead the team in the upcoming season.
This year's event will consist of 10 nationally-ranked opponents including conference foe, No. 23 Duke. Three of the ten teams find themselves starting the season off as top ten teams in the nation.
The SPC has been on a brief hiatus due to COVID. This season the event makes its long awaited return with help from the University of Washington. Some of the past fields of players have boasted some big names on the PGA Tour, including:
The 12 top tier programs competing will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday in a stroke play competition. No. 25 Wake Forest will be teeing off with No. 19 Arizona and Southern California at 8:35 on Saturday. The individual champion of the SPC will receive an exemption into the following week's Fortinet Championship, a PGA Tour event.
THE DEACS' LINEUP
Michael Brennan
The reigning ACC Individual Champion will get the Deacs started on the right foot in Washington. The 19th ranked World Amateur earned a spot at the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles C.C.. Brennan clutched up to qualify for the U.S. Open at Woodmont C.C. The Leesburg native was named to the Fred Haskins Award watch list for the second consecutive season.
Marshall Meisel
Maryland native, Marshall Meisel had an eventful summer finishing in the top 20 at the Maryland Amateur, Palmetto Amateur, and Monroe Invitational. The Junior
ended up winning the Monroe Invitational this past July. Meisel finished off strong during his final appearance last year in the Battle of the Run finishing in the eighth spot.
Scotty Kennon
Junior, Scotty Kennon came into his own during the 2023 season. Towards the end of the season, Kennon posted a -4 score finishing fourth in the Battle of the Run. The Florida native made a top 15 finish tied for 11th in the ACC Championship.
Tom Haberer
The Fall season allows for some new faces on the team to make their mark. Freshman, Tom Haberer, will be making his Wake Forest debut at Sahalee C.C. Haberer came to Wake from Germany and was one of the top amateur golfers prior to arriving in Winston-Salem.
Boyd Owens
Boyd Owens solidified a spot in the starting lineup during his freshman year at Wake. The stellar freshman played a vital role in sending the Deacs to the final round of the ACC Championship. Owens made three top 20 finishes for the Demon Deacons in 2023. His best finish was at the Battle of the run coming in fourth. The Baton Rouge native made history during his freshman season posting the lowest score in a debut round in program history scoring a 63 (-7).
Andrew McLauchlan
After making his Wake Forest debut Andrew McLaughlin will get the nod as the individual contestant this weekend. McLaughlin made a strong impression during his freshman season finishing in the top five at the Calusa Cup. His best performance was in the Battle of the Run posting a -5 score to take home the individual title at Bermuda Run C.C.
