Wake Forest Primed For 2024 ITA Kick-Off Weekend

The first match is slated for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday against San Diego.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Stepping into a familiar event for week three of its spring season. Wake Forest women's tennis (1-1) will spend the next few days in The Sunshine State for the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend, hosted by the University of Florida (Jan. 27-28).
A matchup against San Diego (1-1) will open the Demon Deacons' weekend action on Saturday, with first serve set for 2 p.m. ET.
On Sunday (Jan. 28), Wake Forest will face either the winner or loser of Florida (1-0) versus Florida International (1-1).
A year ago, the Deacs partook in this same event on the grounds of Ohio State University, going up against Tennessee and Old Dominion through two days of play.

Scouting the Opposition
Currently ranked No. 20 in the ITA team standings, San Diego is coming off a 5-2 win over No. 9 Texas A&M two weeks ago during its season-opening weekend (Jan. 13). The team was picked second in the 2024 West Coast Conference (WCC) Preseason Poll, as Claudia De Las Heras and Elizabeth Goldsmith were each named to the WCC's Preseason Team. Reigning WCC Coach of the Year Nadia Abdala leads the way, having brought back an ample amount of experienced players. A pair of ranked individuals rest within the Toreros' roster:
Florida holds a national team ranking of No. 8 and has played a lone match thus far in the spring, downing Baylor this past Saturday (Jan. 20) in a 6-1 decision. The team finished 18-8 overall in 2023, advancing to the Sweet 16 before falling to eventual national champion North Carolina. Several Gators are ranked within the ITA's singles and doubles sections:
Florida International has split wins versus Depaul and No. 21 Miami thus far and will face Florida on Sunday morning (Jan. 28) at 11 a.m. ET. The Panthers are mainly led by No. 104 Oyinlomo Quadre, who is ranked No. 104 in ITA Singles and was named Conference USA Player and Freshman of the Year back in 2023 during her first collegiate year.
Last Time Out
On the opening day of match play for the 2024 season, Wake Forest went 1-1 inside Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tennessee this past Sunday (Jan. 21). After dropping the first showing, 6-1, to the host Vols, the Deacs bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Bellarmine.
Freshman Sankavi Gownder highlighted the day with three individual victories, including the first ranked win of her career in the first match against Tennessee as she took down No. 100 Eleonora Molinaro (6-2, 6-2).
With the victory over Bellarmine, head coach Jeff Wyshner earned his 350th-career win at the helm of a collegiate women's tennis program across his 31 seasons. Marcella Cruz and Brooke Killingsworth collected a doubles win while sophomores Nevena Carton and Whitley Pate added solo victories.

The Deacons travel to its neighboring state next, visiting Old Dominion for a Saturday morning showdown (Feb. 3) in Norfolk, Virginia. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
