The Demon Deacons recorded three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to extend their unbeaten streak to six-straight matches.
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite a one-goal deficit at halftime, the Wake Forest men's soccer team (6-3-5, 2-1-2 ACC) tallied three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half before recording a 4-1 victory over UNCW (3-6-4, 2-3-0 CAA) on Tuesday night.
Wake Forest is now unbeaten in six-straight matches, with victories over Syracuse, ETSU, Boston College and UNCW along with draws against Wofford and current No. 11 Duke.
UNCW did take a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, marking the first goal Wake Forest had conceded in 394 consecutive minutes of action dating back to the Deacs' 2-1 comeback victory over Syracuse on Sept. 27. It would ultimately be the Seahawks' only shot on goal in the match.
The Deacs eventually responded with a goal less than two minutes into the second half, as junior Basit Umar logged his second goal of the season. Then in a 73-second span between the 63rd and 65th minutes, freshmen Daniel Krueger and Dylan Borso notched the game-winning and insurance goals.
In the 79th minute, senior Nicolas Mancilla scored his first career goal as the Deacs beat UNCW keeper Trey Smiley for the fourth time in the second half.
Wake Forest will focus its attention to ACC action for the remainder of the regular season, first facing Virginia Tech on Saturday evening at Spry Stadium.
The contest will serve as the program's annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match and bidding has begun for this year's pink jerseys with proceeds benefiting the Cancer Health Equity Patient Care fund at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will stream on ACC Network Extra.
Six-Straight Unbeaten
With the victory against UNCW, Wake Forest's current unbeaten streak has reached a season-high six matches. During this run, Wake Forest is 4-0-2 and has outscored opponents 10-2.
The Deacs' six-match unbeaten streak is the third-longest in the ACC, trailing only No. 2 Stanford's 10-match unbeaten stretch and No. 10 SMU's seven matches without losing.
How It Happened
"A great win on the road tonight for the group. After going down early, the guys kept playing and stuck together and were able to come out in the second half to find the tying goal and took over from there. A complete team win. Now all focus is trying to get healthy and recharged for a great and highly ranked Virginia Tech team."
