Deacs to Finish Fall Season at 54th Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C.- The Wake Forest men's golf team looks to close their fall schedule at the 54th annual Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course starting Saturday. 

In their most recent outing at the Hamptons Intercollegiate, the Deacs finished in fourth place at one-under par with a final score of 863. 

Round one of the 54-hole tournament tees off on Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.  Round two will follow immediately upon completion of round one.  Final round action is scheduled to begin Sunday with teams teeing off on No. 1 and No. 10 starting at 8:20 a.m.

The Deacs Lineup

Scotty Kennon

Kennon ended the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational even par, holding a share of eighth place and earning his second top-10 finish of his senior season. Kennon got off to a strong start with two birdies in his first five holes. His 67 (-3) was the lowest and only under-par score of the week at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. Kennon finished the Hamptons Intercollegiate tied for 38th. In his outing at the Lyon's Links Invitational, Scotty Kennon claimed his first top-5 finish of his senior season (T4) and the third of his career. After a flawless back nine tallying two eagles and a birdie, the senior carded three rounds of 70 to end 6-under-par. Last season, Kennon captured his first collegiate title at the Calusa Cup, and set a new tournament record shooting six-under par. Last season, he claimed four top-10 finishes over twelve events and ended second on the team in stroke average at 71.92 including eight rounds in the 60s. Last spring, Kennon claimed All ACC and PING All Region honors.

Jakob Melin

Junior Jakob Melin came up clutch with a big final round at the Hamptons Intercollegiate. He turned in his second round of par or better this week, posting a 68 (-4) in the third round and finishing T25. Between holes 13 and 18, Melin carded a birdie on every hole to improve 20 positions up the individual leaderboard. Finished T64 at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. In his outing at the Lyon's Links Invitational, junior Jakob Melin captured his first top-10 finish as a Demon Deacon, holding a share of fourth place. At the Inverness Intercollegiate, junior Jakob Melin ended round three as the top Deac on the individual leaderboard at T28. After a bogey free front nine in round three, Melin maintained composure throughout his final round to keep his spot on the leaderboard. 

Marshall Meisel

Senior Marshall Meisel fired a final round of 69 (-3) and finished runner-up at the Hamptons Intercollegiate at the Maidstone Club on Tuesday. Meisel shot rounds of 70-73-69 to finish the tournament in second place at 4-under par. This was the Chevy Chase, Md. native's best career-finish, and it was his first top-five finish of his senior season

At the Lyon's Links Invitational, Meisel's eight birdies were a team-high in round two, with three coming on his first four holes of the day. Meisel had one of the best scores for the Deacs in round two, posting a 68 (-4). Meisel ended the tournament with his first top-20 finish of the season, holding a share of 15th place. As the only Deac under par in the third round, Marshall Meisel climbed 32 spots up the individual leaderboard finishing at T33 at the Inverness Intercollegiate. Meisel tallied three birdies between holes No. 6 and No. 9, and carded a final round score of 68 (-2), this being the lowest score recorded for the Deacs throughout the Inverness Intercollegiate. 

Tom Haberer

After turning in a team-best 67 in round two of the Hamptons Intercollegiate, sophomore Tom Haberer carded a two-over 74 final round. Haberer remains in the top 25, tying for 21st at four-over par. At the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, sophomore Tom Haberer ended tied for 35th at 7-over-par 219 (73-72-72), climbing four spots up the leaderboard. Recently at the Lyon's Links Invitational, sophomore Tom Haberer carded a low final round of 67 (-5), ending tied for sixth, picking up his first top-10 finish of the season. Playing as an individual at the Inverness Intercollegiate, Tom Haberer was tied for 66th at 12-over-par 219 (69-76-74). Haberer competed in 10 events over 29 rounds during his rookie season and made his first NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship appearances. Haberer secured the highest finish of his career (T5) at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate during the 2023 fall season. 

Kyle Haas

In his latest outing at the Hamptons Intercollegiate, Kyle Haas tallied four birdies during his final round, ending the tournament tied for 17th place. The sophomore shot is best round in round two, carding a two-under 70. Finished T58 at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. Leading the Deacs at the Lyon's Links Invitational, sophomore Kyle Haas ended in third place, tying his best career finish. Haas's continued effort in round three included carding six birdies and finishing the tournament at 7-under-par (69-69-71). At the Inverness Intercollegiate, Haas rose nine spots up the leaderboard to land himself tied for 43rd. Last season, Haas competed in 24 total rounds during his freshman campaign. Haas claimed three top-25 finishes last season, including a top-15 finish at the Bank of Tennessee Invitational (T12).

Playing as an Individual

Jorge Hao

In his second collegiate outing at the Qubein Cup, Hao finished tied for 26th, ending his tournament at 12-over par. Hao posted his best score in round two, carding a 1-under 69. Heading into Tuesday, Hao was sitting in contention and was tied for 15th. At the Lyon's Links Invitational, Hao finished T23 at 5-over. Hao is currently Ranked 26th in the U18 European Golf Rankings, and previously ranked as high as 122nd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Hao has won seven junior events, and finished in the top-10 in 30 junior events.

Collin Adams

At the Hamptons Intercollegiate, Collin Adams, playing as an individual, shot a final-round of 75 to finish the event holding a share of 29th place at 8-over. Playing individually at the  Lyon's Links Invitational, senior Collin Adams was the low Demon Deacon on the leaderboard in round one and held a share of second place. Ending with a bogey-free back nine, Adams closed his round strong as the highest Deac on the leaderboard at 4-under-par. Adams claimed his first top-20 finish of the season, ending the tournament in 13th place. In his outing at the Inverness Intercollegiate, Adams ended round three holding a share of 63rd at 11-over-par. Adams played in a career-high nine events this season, capturing two top-10 finishes. Adams had his best career finish last season, tying for sixth at The Wake Forest Invitational, and carding a season low round of 67. Adams got hot in round two, finishing three-under (67) and tallying the Deacs only eagle of the tournament on hole No. 10.

About the Course

Furman University Golf Course 

Par 71 | 7,131 yards

The Furman University Golf Course was designed by Richard K. Webel of Long Island, N.Y., and Walter Cosby, superintendent of grounds and greens at the Greenbriar Hotel and Golf Resort.  The course was redesigned by Kris Spence in 2010.   Since the late 1970s, the course has been the site of two outstanding college tournaments, the Furman Intercollegiate and the Lady Paladin Invitational. In addition, the course hosts a number of local and state tournaments.
