Demon Deacons Battle No. 3 Virginia in Double Overtime Affair

11/1/2024 8:10:00 PM | Field Hockey

Wake Forest will open up play at the ACC Field Hockey Championship as the No. 7 seed at Kentner Stadium on Tuesday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Despite holding No. 3 Virginia to just five shots on goals, the Wake Forest field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cavaliers on Friday night at Kentner Stadium.

Sophomore Faye Janse continued her great run of form for the Demon Deacons (7-10, 2-6 ACC) with her sixth goal of the season and second-straight contest with a goal, as she put Wake Forest on the board off a penalty corner in the third period.

With the assist on the goal to Janse, freshman Mia Montag notched her sixth assist of the year and is one of just nine ACC student-athletes with six or more assists this season.

The youth of Wake Forest continued to shine as 62 of the Demon Deacon's 78 points came from underclassmen during the regular season.

In goal, junior Ellie Todd picked up three saves and moved to 66 total saves on the season. Todd sits just outside of the top five in program history with a 1.44 goals-against average across her three seasons in the Old Gold & Black. With 191 saves for her career, the Boston, Mass. native needs just nine saves to move over the 200 mark.

How It Happened
  • Wake Forest successfully defended a Virginia penalty corner four minutes into the game.
  • Junior Ellie Todd was forced into action in the tenth minute, making her first save of the contest off a shot from the top of the circle.
  • Virginia took the lead in the 11th minute off a penalty corner.
  • The Demon Deacons earned their first penalty corner of the game in the 13th minute, but freshman Lena Keller's shot was saved by the Virginia goalie, keeping the game 1-0 at the end of the first period.
  • Wake Forest and Virginia traded possession throughout the second period, as the Deacs went into the half down 1-0.
  • The Demon Deacons started the second half on the front foot, as junior Rachel Thetford forced a save from the Virginia goalkeeper less than a minute into the half.
  • Wake Forest would equalize the game less than 10 seconds later, as sophomore Faye Janse rifled a shot into the cage off a penalty corner from freshman Mia Montag.
    • The goal was Janse's sixth goal of the season and the eighth goal of her career.
    • Back Mia Montag continued her incredible freshman campaign, recording her sixth assist on the season with the insert on the penalty corner.
  • Both the Demon Deacons and the Cavaliers traded possession as they went into the fourth period tied at 1-1.
  • Wake earned a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter with freshman Lauren Storey tested the UVA keeper, but a kick save kept the match knotted at 1-1.
  • A pair of late saves from Todd sent the Deacs to overtime for the fourth time in the last six matches.
  • With time winding down in the first overtime, Storey had her attempt blocked to send the match into a second OT period.
  • Virginia found the game-winner with 2:36 left in the period to take the match, 2-1.

Quotables
"What I love about this team is that we keep getting stronger. We're certainly starting to understand where we can have great success. Tonight was a success despite the loss. Our players are playing with a different agenda. They understand the seriousness of postseason play. If we can continue with efforts like we had today, then hopefully we can extend our season." - head coach Jen Averill
