Coach Hayes secures ACC Coach of the Year honors, Jourdon garners ACC Freshman of the Year announced by the USTFCCCA Friday.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- After guiding the Wake Forest men's cross country team to their sixth ACC Championship and securing the 58th Conference Championship in Wake Forest Athletics history, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Coach John Hayes was named ACC Coach of the Year as announced by the league office on Friday. Freshman standout JoJo Jourdon also shined, earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors with an impressive eighth-place finish at the ACC Cross Country Championships.
This honor marks the second time in the past three years that Hayes has received this esteemed honor.
During the 2024 campaign and his ninth year as head coach, Hayes led the Demon Deacons to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships after entering as the No. 14 ranked team in the nation.
As the highest-finishing freshman in his first ever collegiate 8k, Jourdon (22:40.1) dominated in the ACC Cross Country Championships, finishing eighth and becoming the fourth Demon Deacon to capture the ACC Freshman of the Year honors in the past eight years (following teammate Charlie Sprott who received the award in 2023).
In November, the Deacs claimed the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, marking the program's sixth championship and the 58th ACC Championship overall for Wake Forest Athletics and Hayes's second championship in three years.
Hayes guided an All-American performance for sophomore Charlie Sprott, as he became the seventh Demon Deacon to earn All-American honors with an impressive 32nd-place finish, recording a personal-best time of 29:21.6 at the NCAA Championships.
Additionally, senior Luke Tewalt earned his second ACC Championship victory in just three years, as well as his third All-ACC and second All-Regional honors. Junior Joe O'Brien earned his second All-ACC selection and first All-Regional award. Sprott was also awarded with All-ACC and All-Regional, along with All-ACC selection Aidan Ross.
During the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships Hayes coached Sprott to a 32nd place finish, clocking 29:21.6 en route to an All-American honor.
Hayes also coached the Demon Deacons to a third place finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational on Sept. 27, highlighted by sophomore Rocky Hansen's second place finish with a career-best time of 23:06.9. The squad finished their regular-season, winning the Panorama Farms Invitational with 38 points.
