Versus Old Dominion
Old Dominion has opened the season 1-2, with all three matches coming against Power Five opponents. It opened the season with a close, 3-4 defeat at Florida State before earning a 4-0 sweep over Iowa State at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Monarchs eventually fell to No. 3 Oklahoma State on the second day of the event.
Last season, Old Dominion posted a 19-5 record and won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with three-consecutive 4-0 sweeps. The Monarchs went on to take down No. 31 South Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before ultimately losing, 4-0, at No. 1 North Carolina in the second round for the second time in three years. They finished the season ranked No. 33 in the nation.
Not including the COVID–shortened 2020 season, the Monarchs have made four-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and three-consecutive second round appearances.
George Mason has only played one match so far this season, a 6-0 defeat to VCU on the road. Last season, the Patriots went 10-7 and extended their streak to five-consecutive winning seasons.
Last Time Out
Last weekend, (Jan. 27-28), the Demon Deacons dropped a pair of matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Gainesville, Fla with a 4-0 loss to San Diego and a 4-2 defeat to FIU.
In the first match against San Diego, the Demon Deacons got off to a good start as sophomore Krystal Blanch and senior Casie Wooten earned a 6-2 win in second doubles, but the Wake Forest pairs on the other two courts dropped tight matches as San Diego took the doubles point.
Despite not picking up a point, the Deacs were within striking distance in the three unfinished matches. Freshman Sankavi Gownder was one point away from winning her match before San Diego clinched on Court 3.
The contest against FIU featured the first-career singles win for sophomore Krystal Blanch in a dual-match setting. She was also the first individual to record a solo victory throughout the day, doing so in straight-sets fashion.
Wins in doubles play went the way of Marcella Cruz/Brooke Killingsworth and Sankavi Gownder/Whitley Pate. The latter put on a dominant display en route to dropping only a single game.
