CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the third time this season, members of the Wake Forest women's tennis team have been honored with ACC weekly awards as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Senior Casie Wooten earned her second ACC Player of the Week honor of the season while fellow senior Brooke Killingsworth and graduate student Marcella Cruz earned ACC Doubles Team of the Week.
It was the first doubles team in Wake Forest history to win the new honor, while No. 35 Wooten became the first Wake Forest player to win ACC Player of the Week twice in the same season since Bea Bielik in 2002.
Wooten highlighted Saturday's doubleheader with her first-career victory over a top-five opponent, as she took down No. 3 Ayana Akli (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) in first singles against South Carolina. It marked Wooten's fifth ranked win of the 2023-24 season and third of the spring. She followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the second match, in addition to a 6-3 doubles win with redshirt freshman Krystal Blanch.
Cruz and Killingsworth got their first win over a ranked doubles pair together, 6-3 over No. 27 Akli/Lancelot in first doubles. They are now 4-1 as a partnership during dual play this season, including four-consecutive wins.
"Excited to see Casie, Brooke and Marcella recognized for how well they played on Saturday," head coach Jeff Wyshner said. "As a new award for ACC women's tennis, that's our first ever doubles team of the week and a second time this year for Casie is unique as well. If our seniors and grad student keep leading us like this, then we have a lot to look forward to this spring."
The Deacs will be in action again this weekend as they travel to Montgomery, Ala. for the Blue Gray Classic from Friday to Saturday (Feb. 23-24).
