Deacons to Bring in Wolfpack for Second Season Meeting on Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The first of two consecutive Big Four contests for Wake Forest men's basketball (15-7, 7-4) takes place this weekend, as the Demon Deacons prepare to host NC State (15-8, 7-5) on Saturday afternoon inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Feb. 10).
Tip off is slated for 4 p.m. ET and fans can watch the action on ACC Network.
Saturday will be Wake Forest's third Big Four outing of 2023-24 and second versus NC State, as the two sides faced in Raleigh last month (Jan. 16).
The Deacs are coming off a resounding 80-51 road victory at Georgia Tech earlier this week (Feb. 6). Having also downed Syracuse last Saturday at home (Feb. 3) in a 99-70 decision, Wake Forest ultimately recorded back-to-back wins by 29 or more points in consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference games for the first time since the Deacons did so in the league's inaugural season in 1953-54.
Last Time Out
With the 80-51 win on Tuesday (Feb. 6), Wake Forest is on a three-game winning streak versus the Yellow Jackets, as the feat additionally tied for the ninth-largest road victory in program history and fifth-largest such win against an ACC foe.
The Deacs' defense impressed as a whole, holding the host to just a 28.3 field goal percentage and 12.5 three-point clip (3-for-24). Wake Forest additionally outrebounded Georgia Tech, 42-31, and held a 46-20 lead after the first 20 minutes – tied for the fifth-largest halftime lead over an ACC opponent in program history.
All five starters for the Deacs reached double figures in scoring, led by Cameron Hildreth's game-high 17 points. The Worthing, England native made all seven of his attempts at the free-throw line and dished out four assists while scooping three steals.
Kevin Miller and Andrew Carr chipped in 13 points apiece. Carr snagged 10 rebounds to post his fourth double-double of 2023-24. Miller added four rebounds and three assists to his line in 28 minutes played.
Efton Reid III and Hunter Sallis totaled 10 points each, with the former also grabbing seven rebounds. Damari Monsanto netted three triples to contribute 11 points in just over 15 minutes.
Wake Forest went a perfect 17-of-17 from the charity stripe against the Yellow Jackets. It marked the second-most made free throws without a miss in program history and most since the 32-of-32 performance against North Carolina on Jan. 15, 2005.
The Deacs shared the ball well to have 17 assists on 29 made baskets.

Controlling the Boards
Through ACC competition, the Deacs lead the conference in defensive rebounding. Junior big man Efton Reid III has steadied an impact on the glass, especially within conference play. The Richmond, Virginia, native has grabbed 97 total rebounds in his 11 ACC appearances (8.8/game) and stands fourth among all conference individuals in defensive rebounds (6.6/game).
For the winter, fellow team captains Andrew Carr and Cameron Hildreth average just under seven and five rebounds a night, respectively.
Steady Scorer
Having started in all of the team's 22 games and averaging a team-high 17.9 points per game clip, newcomer Hunter Sallis is the lone Deac to have registered double figures in scoring through every contest thus far. The junior guard's 17.7 scoring average in ACC games rests third best among the league. In five of his conference performances, Sallis has poured in 20 or more points:
Sallis also leads the ACC in minutes per game with a 34.9 average.
Collective and Efficient
Still standing as the ACC's leader in free throw percentage as a team (.802), Wake Forest also ranks third nationally within that same category. Over the first 22 games of the season, the Deacs have recorded five games of shooting over 90 percent from the charity stripe and 12 in which they have shot above 80 percent. In ACC play, the Deacs are 165-for-201 (80.4 percent) – the second-highest mark in the conference. Lead guard Kevin Miller has played a heavy role on that end, making 49 of his 54 attempts in 11 league games to sit fourth-best in free-throw percentage (.907).
The Deacs have additionally stayed strong as a unit in their scoring to stand first in the ACC in team three-point percentage (.380) and second in team field goal percentage (.478). Four Deacons have started in all 22 games and are shooting 47 percent or better from the floor:

NC State most recently played Pittsburgh at home in a midweek showing (Feb. 7), suffering a 67-64 defeat to the Panthers. Transfer guard DJ Horne has led the way in averaging a team-best 16.1 points-per-game mark, good for 11th in the league. Other notable scorers include Casey Morsell (12.0 ppg), D.J. Burns Jr. (11.8 ppg) and Jayden Taylor (11.4 ppg).
Reserve forward Mohammed Diarra has appeared in all but one of the Wolfpack's 23 games and has hauled in the most rebounds (5.8). Burns Jr. and Ben Middlebrooks both also average 4.3 and 4.1 rebounds a night, respectively. The former's 50.6 field goal shooting percentage ranks seventh in the ACC.
Defensively, NC State is fourth in the conference in steals (7.96/game).

During that time, Wake Forest won 15-straight games on its floor, which was the longest home-win streak since the Deacs went 22-0 during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.
