Kurtz and Reinisch both homered for the Deacs in the loss.
CONWAY, S.C. – Wake Forest fought to trim a 12-run deficit down to just four but ultimately fell, 17-9, to No. 16 Coastal Carolina at Springs Brooks Stadium on Tuesday night.
Junior Nick Kurtz finished 2-for-3 with a season-high four RBIs and his third homer of the year, while right fielder Jake Reinisch homered for the third-straight game for his fifth of the year. Reinisch now leads the Deacs with 21 RBIs on the year.
In his Demon Deacon debut, freshman lefty Levi Strahm weathered 2.1 strong innings for Wake, allowing just one run on four hits and induced a big double play ball to give the Deacs a chance at a comeback.
Fellow freshman Cam Nelson added a pair of runs scored and a hit in the designated hitter spot. The two-way player added a pair of strikeouts on the mound, tossing the final inning for the Deacs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FROM COACH WALTER
"We got what we needed out of that game. It's obviously never good to lose and certainly never good to give up as many free passes as we gave up. We had to rest our leverage bullpen guys. We have been working those guys pretty hard. [Will] Ray, [David] Falco and [Josh] Gunther needed a day off. We were hoping for a better start out of Ben [Shenosky].
I liked what we did offensively today. It was good to see Kurtz get going. Hopefully we can get that version of Nick Kurtz here coming with our bullpen rested and ready to go for Friday. We feel good about where we are right now. It is never good to lose but we got out of today what we needed to." - head coach Tom Walter
UP NEXT
Wake Forest will return to conference play with a three-game series against Virginia beginning on Friday, March 15 at 4 p.m. For those unable to attend, the game will be streamed on ACCNX.
