The No. 14 Wake Forest baseball team has now won six of its last seven games, taking the last two weekend series and are now .500 in ACC play.

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Behind strong production from the top of the lineup as well as a collective effort on the mound, the No. 14 Wake Forest baseball team claimed its second-consecutive ACC series, defeating Boston College 9-3 Sunday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton, Mass.

With the win, Wake Forest (24-11, 9-9 ACC) has now won six of its last seven games and have now pulled to .500 in conference play.

The Deacs were led by the top of the lineup as the first four players in the order went a combined 10-of-18 (.556), scoring seven runs, producing five RBI and reaching base a combined 16 times in the game.

No one has applied more pressure on opponents over the last couple of weeks than junior Nick Kurtz who continued his lights out hitting against Boston College (19-16, 7-11 ACC) to clinch the series. Kurtz reached base five times in the win including a pair of home runs which now brings his total to 13 home runs in the last nine games. He now leads the team with 16 home runs this season and has 55 home runs over the course of his career, tying him for third in program history with Jake Austin (1989-92):

Rank  Player Career Home Runs
1. Brock Wilken (2021-23) 71
2. Jamie D'Antona (2001-03) 58
T3. Nick Kurtz (2022-Pres.) 55
T3. Jake Austin (1989-92) 55
5. Allan Dykstra (2006-08) 49

Kurtz also walked three times in the win, bringing his season total to 39 and his nation leading career total to 150 walks in 139 games played (1.1 walks/game). He is now just 30 walks away from the program record and comfortably sits in third in program history:

Rank  Player Career Home Walks
1. Pat Blair (2010-13) 180
2. Allan Dykstra (2006-08) 170
T3. Nick Kurtz (2022-Pres.) 150
T3. Matt Antonelli (2004-06) 128
5. Brock Wilken (2021-23) 126

The Demon Deacons were also led by a strong leadoff performance from Marek Houston who registered a career-high tying four hits out of the leadoff spot including a pair of doubles. He is now batting .339 for the season which is .124 points better than his freshman campaign.

Adam Tellier and Jack Winnay also had a pair of hits in the win. It marked the 16th multi-hit game for Tellier this season and the 13th for Winnay. This was the fourth time in the last five games that Winnay has had a multi-hit game with all four resulting in Wake Forest wins.

On the mound, six Demon Deacons combined to give up just three earned runs with a strong 2.1 inning performance from freshman righthander Blake Morningstar highlighting the afternoon. He did not allow one Eagle running to reach base and helped him pick up the win, improving to 2-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wake Forest loaded the bases with nobody away but were unable to score in the top of the first.
  • The Eagles got on the board first with a run in the bottom half.
  • Freshman Javar Williams leadoff the second with a single to left field and would come home on shortstop Marek Houston's fifth hit of the weekend to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Starter Michael Massey responded with a big shutdown frame in the bottom of the second, picking up his first strikeout of the game for the final out.
  • The Deacs grabbed a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in their half of the third.
    • First baseman Nick Kurtz launched his team-leading 15th homer of the year off the batter's eye on the first pitch of the frame.
    • Williams came through again for the Deacs in the third, sending a ball back up the middle to plate sophomore Jack Winnay, who reached on a walk and advanced to second on a B.C. miscue.
  • Boston College loaded the bases with one away in the bottom of the third but a strikeout and flyout got Massey out of the inning without any damage for another shutdown inning.
  • Wake Forest extended their lead with three in the top of the fourth.
    • Houston started the inning with his second double and third hit of the afternoon, slapping the ball into right center.
    • Second baseman Adam Tellier drew a four pitch walk and was followed by Kurtz's second walk of the day to load the bases.
    • Massachusetts native Jack Winnay placed a ball perfectly to right field to plate Houston for the first run of the inning.
    • A sacrifice fly from senior Jake Reinisch to left field made it 5-1 in favor of the Deacs.
    • Williams stretched the advantage to five with his second RBI of the day on a fielder's choice to cap the scoring.
  • Boston College got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2.
  • Freshman Blake Morningstar made quick work of the B.C. hitters, needing just 19 pitches for a 1-2-3 fifth and sixth inning.
  • Fellow Freshman Josh Gunther threw another zero on the board with a scoreless seventh inning.
  • Righty Will Ray worked around a two-out double for the Deacs fourth-straight scoreless inning.
  • The Deacs added three insurance runs in the ninth to secure the win.
    • Pinch hitter Antonio Morales nearly left the yard to right center, settling for his first career triple to leadoff the frame.
    • Freshman Cam Nelson lifted a sac fly to left field to plate Morales and stretch the score to 7-3.
    • After Tellier reached on a fielder's choice, Kurtz deposited a 3-2 fastball deep over the wall in right field for his second of the game to cap the scoring for Wake Forest.
  • Graduate student Cole Roland entered in the ninth and recorded the final three outs.
  • Wake Forest took the series with a 9-3 victory.

FROM COACH WALTER
"Huge win. We had to have that win to get back to .500 in the league. It's good to win any series on the road. Obviously, we're still disappointed about yesterday's loss but great to see how our team responded today.

Michael Massey didn't feel great and didn't have his best stuff today. He battled and got us out of a couple of jams, especially there in the third with the bases loaded and got us back in the dugout. Blake Morningstar came in and threw the ball really well today getting seven outs for us. It was good to see Cole Roland out there for the ninth.

Offensively, the top four guys in our lineup got it done today. Marek had a big day. Telly had a good day. Nick Kurtz, obviously, with the two homers and a couple of walks. Jack Winnay with a couple of knocks. Javar Williams had a great day for us in the seven spot.

That's a good team win. We'll rest up and get ready for a good UNCW team on Tuesday. "  - head coach Tom Walter
