The Demon Deacons added three home runs to their ACC-leading 103 blasts on the season.
The one through seven hole hitters in the Wake Forest (36-17, 15-13 ACC) lineup recorded hits, including home runs by third baseman Seaver King, first baseman Nick Kurtz and second baseman Adam Tellier.
With his solo shot to lead off the second inning, King extended his hitting streak to 12 games and has now reached base safely in 26-consecutive games. Since the start of April, the junior is batting .356 (37-104) and has notched at least one hit in 24 of the 26 games during that span. Additionally, he is now tied for the team-lead with 63 runs batted in this campaign along with Reinisch.
Directly following King, Tellier joined him in homering in consecutive games as he knocked his 12th big fly of the season. The graduate transfer has successfully reached base in 48 of his 53 games as a Demon Deacon.
In the top of the fifth, Kurtz recorded his team-high 21st home run of the season and 60th of his career. His 60 long shots rank second in Wake Forest history as he's now just 11 behind former teammate Brock Wilken for the program record. The junior also drew a walk Thursday night for the 178th free pass of his career and is now three away from breaking the program mark set by Pat Blair (2010-13).
Five of the Deacs seven hits went for extra bases, as right fielder Jack Winnay and designated hitter Jake Renisch both added a double.
For the sixth time this season, reliever Crawford Wade tossed a scoreless frame for the Demon Deacons with a punchout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite making NC State's starting pitcher work and throw 28 pitches in the top of the first, the Demon Deacons were unable to strike after shortstop Marek Houston's leadoff walk.
- Making his third-career start, righty David Falco tossed a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout in the bottom of the first.
- Wake Forest struck first as junior Seaver King and graduate transfer Adam Tellier hit back-to-back home runs to open the second inning.
- It marked the second-straight game with a homer for both King and Tellier, after the pair both left the yard on Sunday against Clemson.
- The Wolfpack got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but Falco was able to limit the damage as he got a flyball out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
- Sophomore Jack Winnay stayed hot with a two-out double but that was all for Wake Forest in the top of the third.
- NC State tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.
- The Deacs left a pair stranded in the top of the fourth inning.
- With two on and one out, Falco was relieved by freshman Haiden Leffew in the bottom of the fourth, a balk and a groundout plated two to give NC State a 4-2 advantage.
- Wake Forest got one of the runs back with a solo home run by junior Nick Kurtz over the left field foul pole for his 21st of the year to cut the deficit to 4-3.
- The Wolfpack extended their lead to three on an RBI groundout and Wake Forest miscue.
- Wake Forest threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth but were unable to scratch a run across.
- NC State added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3.
- Reliever Crawford Wade kept the Pack off the board with a scoreless frame in the seventh.
- NC State added seven runs in the bottom of the eighth and defeated the Demon Deacons, 3-14.
FROM COACH WALTER
"Obviously, we didn't play a very good baseball game today. We gave up too many free passes. They scored the first run on the triple and then a jam shot to left and then the home run. After that, we gave them the next five runs. They scored two runs in one inning on only one hit and that was a bunt. They scored another two runs in an inning where they only had one hit again. They scored their seventh run on a free pass that we let get to second on a ball in the dirt. I felt like we just handed them their next five runs. We have to do a better job offensively. I think we were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position early in the game. We didn't do a good job with our at-bats all day. The point is, if we play clean baseball early in the game and that's a different score late, who knows what happens. We have to play better baseball. The good news is we've got our two guys throwing the next two days with a good chance to win a series. " - head coach Tom Walter
