CARLSBAD, Calif. - The second-seeded Demon Deacons began play at the 2024 National Championship Friday afternoon at La Costa Resort.
Paced by veterans Rachel Kuehn and Mimi Rhodes, who both shot even par in the opening round, the Deacs shot seven-over in the first 18 holes of the Championship. As a team, Wake totaled 10 birdies and 58 pars on the day.
Kuehn went even par on the par threes while Rhodes finished even on the par fours. Freshman Brooke Rivers went one-under on the par fives and fellow freshman Macy Pate led the team individually with 14 pars. Kuehn led the Deacs with four birdies in her opening round.
A long course with undulated greens proved to be a test for the best teams in the country as only eight teams in the 30-team field were more than one under par on opening day. Wake Forest is just four strokes off the top 15, where the first cut will be made at the conclusion of play Sunday.
Saturday's second round will begin with tee times at 6:40 a.m. PT. Wake Forest will tee off the first hole starting at 6:40 and will again be paired with Stanford and South Carolina.
