The Wake Forest senior turned heads during his first day within the annual event.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Looking to keep his spring active, Wake Forest men's tennis senior Filippo Moroni enjoyed an exceptional performance on Monday evening (May 20) during the opening round of the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships. Matched up against No. 2 Eliot Spizzirri of the University of Texas for the second time in three days, the Demon Deacon finished with the upper hand in a straight-sets win (6-1, 7-5).

Moroni will advance into the event's Round of 32, set to unfold on Tuesday (May 21). His next test as a solo player will involve facing No. 37 Sunshuke Mitsui of the University of Tennessee.

Currently ranked No. 25 within the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) singles section, Moroni's Monday victory included his second win over a top-3 nationally-ranked opponent this spring.

This year marks Moroni's second career appearance within the NCAA singles tournament, as he also made way to the singles Round of 32 during the 2022 edition.

Opening his match, Moroni split his first two games before winning the third and fourth for a 3-1 lead. Two more games won then went his way before the senior comfortably captured a 6-1 first-set decision.

The second frame sat tied at 2-all early on before Spizzirri took a pair of consecutive games. After dropping another, Moroni worked admirably to win three more and even the ledger at 5-5. The Deac maintained poised play to remain untouched down the stretch and complete a five-game comeback, winning the match in straight sets on a final 7-5 clip in the second.
