
Wake Forest Drops 2-1 Contest to No. 12 Michigan

Sophomore Faye Janse found the back of the cage in the first quarter for the Deacs first goal of the 2024 campaign.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Wrapping up play at the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, the No. 18 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 2-1 to the hosting No. 12 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Wake Forest (0-2, 0-0 ACC) picked up its first and only corner of the match with just 8:24 in the final quarter of play, while Michigan (1-1, 0-0 Big 10) finished the match with seven. The Wolverines outshot the Demon Deacons, 17-4.
Sophomore Faye Janse scored the first goal of the 2024 season for the Deacs, knocking down a ball played in from the 25 by Mia Schoenbeck, fired a shot to the left side of the cage and lasered it past the Michigan keeper to put the Deacs up 1-0.
For Janse, it marked the third goal of her Wake Forest career and the second assist for Schoenbeck.
Junior goalie Ellie Todd finished the contest with eight saves, while Amelia Frey and Mia Montag both had shots for the Deacs to go with Janse's pair.

How It Happened
- Both teams looked to find their footing as no shots were put on cage in the first 12:30 minutes of action.
- The Deacs took advantage of a Michigan green card to create their first chance of the match.
- Sophomore Mia Schoenbeck played a beautiful aerial into fellow second-year Faye Janse, who knocked down the pass and fired a shot into the left side of the cage to put Wake Forest up 1-0.
- The goal was the third of Janse's young career, while the assist was the second of her career for Schoenbeck.
- Michigan answered less than a minute later to tie the game at 1-1 off of a penalty corner.
- Junior goalkeeper Ellie Todd had a massive sequence to keep the match tied, coming up with four saves in a one run of play off a Michigan corner to start the second quarter.
- Janse came up with the Deacs lone opportunity of the second period, sending a shot wide of the frame.
- Todd made another great save for her eighth of the contest, diving to her right and getting her stick to a ball sent in by a Michigan attacker.
- The Wolverines grabbed a 2-1 lead with just three seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- Junior Amelia Frey created a dangerous chance for Wake Forest with just under 10 minutes left in the match, but her shot sailed wide of the cage.
- On the first corner of the match for the Deacs, freshman Mia Montag nearly tied things at 2-2, but her shot went wide.
- Michigan held on to take the match, 2-1.
