Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
It's Homecoming time in DEACTOWN and we are excited to welcome Wake Forest alumni, family and friends from around the globe back to Winston-Salem for an action-packed weekend!
And, with today's announcement of The Grounds, I know that many Wake Foresters will think nostalgically about the great times, good food and fun music that used to make the area around Deacon Boulevard and Baity Street a hopping spot year round.
With "The Grounds," we are headed back to the future as this dynamic mixed-use development will amplify Winston-Salem's entertainment and sports landscape! Our partners at Carter and Front Street Capital have worked hand-in-hand with the City of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County and the State of North Carolina as well as our University leadership to build a visionary multi-phase plan for the 100 acres of Wake Forest owned property east of the Reynolda Campus and adjacent to Allegacy Stadium, David F. Couch Ballpark, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds & Arena. This mixed-use development and entertainment hub will be home to residential, commercial and dining options in addition to community gathering and green spaces.
Actual construction on The Grounds will begin in December. Between now and the formal groundbreaking, we'll be sharing more information about traffic and access changes in the area during the building process. In collaboration with our local and state transportation colleagues, we have embarked on a long needed major events traffic engineering study which will result in improved access and traffic flow for all major events. And, the grading and site improvements of the Baity Street and Deacon Boulevard area will create new parking spaces to ensure our net-parking capacity will not be negatively impacted by these first phase improvements.
Overall, it has been inspiring to collaborate with so many stakeholders throughout the development of this project. As Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines says, "The Grounds represents a new era of vibrancy and opportunity for our city. This project is more than just a development; it's a roadmap to a thriving future for Winston-Salem." Additionally, President Wente has also emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "The Grounds will enhance the student experience, attract new talent, and contribute to the city's overall vitality. It's about creating a common ground for all."
The enhancements and evolution of this area will not only bolster our goal of providing the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina, but will also create year-round opportunities that bring Value to Wake Forest, Winston-Salem and our Triad Communities. Building on the 750,000 annual visitors on 260 event days in the quadrant with events like Paul McCartney in 2022, Billy Strings in 2023, the annual ATP Winston-Salem Open, high school graduations, and the Face to Face Speaker Series, and of course Deacon sports, The Grounds will be a further catalyst for economic development and investment improving the quality of life for our entire Triad Community. For more information visit the Grounds website, or send your thoughts, questions and suggestions for what you might like to see in The Grounds to Info@VisitTheGrounds.com.
Athletics Action and More Highlight a Big Homecoming Weekend
The Homecoming weekend athletics action starts Friday in Spry Stadium with Coach Bobby Muuss' men's soccer squad in action at 7 p.m against the University of Virginia in the ACC opener for both programs. We'll launch our traditional night-before-home-football game fireworks around 9 p.m. following the conclusion of the match! Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the SOLD OUT football game against the No. 5 Ole Miss Rebels. Finally, on Sunday, Coach Jen Averill's field hockey team returns home to the friendly confines of Kentner Stadium for a noon match against VCU.
Our friends in University Advancement and Alumni Activities put on one heck of a Homecoming weekend to bring old friends and family together to reconnect and reminisce. Tickets to reunion parties and the alumni tailgate can be purchased at the Welcome Center on Friday and at the door to the events (until they reach capacity). Click here for all the information on Wake Homecoming '24!
Annual 'Climb to Remember' Honors 9/11 Victims Set for Wednesday
Another great tradition continues tomorrow morning as ROTC cadet students of Wake Forest, Winston-Salem State and Salem College will host the "Climb to Remember" at Allegacy Stadium tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Following remarks and a moment of silence, everyone will climb 2,997 steps in memory of each life lost on that tragic day in 2001. We appreciate the "No Fear" Battalion for leading this unique and memorable tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11 - and this event it is free for all community members to attend.
Finally, here are today's From the Quad Big 3:
And, don't forget your gameday D.E.A.C.S.!
