Wake Forest Hosting No. 10 Elon in Mental Health Awareness Match

The Demon Deacons will face the Phoenix in the program’s annual Mental Health Awareness Match, as Wake Forest will wear special green jerseys.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest men's soccer will close out a three-match homestand on Tuesday night, facing unbeaten No. 10 Elon in the Demon Deacons' annual Mental Health Awareness Match. 

The Deacs will be wearing special green Nike jerseys for the match, with proceeds going to the Mariam Niang Memorial Scholarship housed with the Crosby Scholars. The scholarship is awarded to a Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools senior who completes an essay on one of three prompts pertaining to mental health wellness and awareness. Bidding on the jerseys is open and runs through the end of day Tuesday

Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the match will air nationally on the ACC Network.

The Matchup
  • Wake Forest and Elon will meet for the first time since the 2017 season on Tuesday night, as the Demon Deacons will face their second ranked foe of the season in the No. 10 Phoenix. 
  • In the first contest against a ranked opponent this season, Wake Forest recorded a 1-1 draw at No. 21 UCF. 
  • The Deacs enter the match with a 2-2-2 overall record, as Wake Forest last week scored a 1-0 victory over Radford before tallying a point in the ACC opener from a 1-1 draw with Virginia. 
  • Elon, meanwhile, is one of four programs that has won all of its matches this season following a 4-3 comeback victory over Delaware on Saturday and sports a 6-0-0 record. 
Last Time Out
  • In the Deacs' ACC opener, Wake Forest recorded a 1-1 draw against Virginia. 
  • Six minutes into the match, Wake Forest conceded a goal to the Cavaliers, however, responded in the second half from an incredible free kick goal from junior Cooper Flax in the 70th minute. 
  • Throughout the second half, Wake Forest was on the front foot, as the Deacs recorded nine shots while Virginia did not record a shot attempt. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Trace Alphin recorded two massive saves on the night, first stopping a 34th-minute penalty kick before a behind the back stop from a Virginia corner kick in the 43rd minute. 
  • The Deacs finished the night with 70 percent of possession. 
The Spry Advantage
  • Since head coach Bobby Muuss' arrival in 2015 along with the coaching staff of associate head coaches Dane Brenner and Steve Armas along with assistant coach Ade Taiwo, Wake Forest ranks No. 1 nationally in home wins (104), 17 more than any other program nationally during that span and 21 more than any ACC program. 
  • Over the last 10 seasons, the Deacs have won at least eight of their matches at Spry Stadium including a double-digit win total seven of those seasons. 
  • Wake Forest's home winning percentage of 81.9 percent since 2015 also ranks third nationally, behind only Indiana (84.6) and Denver (82.5). 
Scouting the Phoenix  
  • Elon is coming off a historic comeback on Saturday night, wiping away a 3-0 48th-minute deficit against Delaware by scoring four goals in a 15-minute stretch starting in the 66th minute. 
  • Offensively, the Phoenix have been led by the dynamic trio of Colin Veltri (five goals and three assists), Victor Stromsten (three goals and six assists) and Scott Vatne (four goals and three assists). 
  • Goalkeeper Tomasz Wroblewski, meanwhile, has allowed just five goals in six matches this season. 
  • At 6-0-0, Elon is one of four programs to win all of their matches so far this season, joined by the College of Charleston (6-0-0), No. 13 Seton Hall (6-0-0) and No. 15 Penn (4-0-0). 
  • The Demon Deacons lead the all-time series 9-4-1 including a 4-2-1 record in matches played in Winston-Salem. 
  • Wake Forest won the first five matches played between the two sides between 1980 and 2006 and the most recent in a 2-0 victory on Oct. 17, 2017. 
Looking Ahead
  • Wake Forest will compete in its first road ACC match of the season on Friday night, traveling to South Carolina to face No. 5 Clemson. 
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the match will air nationally on the ACC Network.
