The Matchup - SC State
Sunday will mark SC State's first match of the 2025 season. Last year, they compiled a record of 14-8, including a 5-0 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs then won the MEAC Tournament and booked a spot in the NCAA Tournament before falling to the Deacs in the first round.

Last year's tournament clash was the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools, with Wake Forest holding a perfect 4-0 record over the Bulldogs.

Last Time Out
Highlighted by the debut of graduate transfer standout Stefan Dostanic, the No. 4-Demon Deacons picked up a 4-0 road victory over Baylor Friday afternoon in Waco, Texas.

With the victory, Wake Forest has now started the season 3-0 for the third time in four years.

Dostanic, a former PAC-12 Singles and Doubles Player of the Year, started his Wake Forest career with a strong showing on Friday. In doubles, he partnered with junior DK Suresh Ekambaram on court one and easily handled the No. 3-doubles pair in the country with a 6-3 victory over Miladinovic/Brostrom Poulsen.

On court two, the No. 4-ranked doubles team of sophomore Luca Pow and senior Luciano Tacchi continued their strong start to the season with a 6-4 victory over No. 17 Badenhorst/Velcz. The pair is now 3-0 on the year after being named ITA Doubles All-Americans last fall.

After taking the doubles point, the Demon Deacons (3-0, 0-0 ACC)  carried the momentum into singles, where Dostanic wrapped up his impressive debut with a dominant, 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 25 Devin Badenhorst in first singles.

Tacchi, who is now 3-0 in doubles and 3-0 in singles already this season, moved the Demon Deacons to within one win away from clinching the match as he downed Louis Bowden in fourth singles, 6-2, 6-3.

For the third-consecutive match to open the season, newcomer Ioannis Xilas clinched the victory for the Demon Deacons with a 7-6(6), 6-3 win on court three over No. 54 Zsombor Velcz.

With the win, Wake Forest improved to 5-3 all-time against Baylor (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) and now holds a three-match winning streak in the series.

The Bresky Era
Since arriving at Wake Forest, head coach Tony Bresky has enjoyed a decorated career, winning ITA National Coach of the Year in 2018, along with garnering ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2013 and 2016. Additionally, Bresky has been tabbed ITA Regional Coach of the Year on five occasions (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2024). Of note, Bresky led Wake Forest to its first-ever national title in 2018, after accumulating a 33-2 mark.

Individually, Bresky has coached two ACC Players of the Year (Noah Rubin and Melios Efstathiou), along with 35 All-ACC selections and 10 ITA Singles All-Americans.

During his tenure at Wake Forest, Bresky has amassed 333 wins. Of note, early in 2023 with a victory over No. 6 Tennessee, Bresky became the winningest coach in program history, surpassing the legendary Jim Leighton.

Wake Forest's Team Success Under Bresky
  • NCAA Championship: 2018
  • ACC Tournament: 2016, 2018, 2019
  • ACC Regular Season: 2017, 2018, 2019
  • ITA National Team Indoor Championship: 2018

Bresky's teams have also excelled in the classroom during his stint in Winston-Salem, as he's coached 22 All-ACC Academic Team honorees and an ACC Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Returners Shine at NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships
In the fall, standout DK Suresh Ekambaram was officially tabbed as a singles All-American following his run to the semifinals at the NCAA Championships. It marked his first time earning the honors in singles and second time overall, after being named a doubles All-American back in the spring with Holden Koons.

He became the 13th Wake Forest player to accomplish the feat and just the second Demon Deacon to become an All-American in singles and doubles, joining Cory Parr (2006-2009). Additionally, Suresh is just the fourth Demon Deacon to reach the semifinals and first since Petros Chrysochos and Borna Gojo both made a run to the finals in 2018.

After earning automatic qualification to the championships by winning the Carolina Regionals, the doubles pair of freshman Luca Pow and graduate student Luciano Tacchi carried the momentum into Texas.

The duo became All-Americans for the first time after a comeback victory over Indiana's No. 52-ranked Facundo Yunis/Jip van Assendelft in the round of 16. It marked the ninth time in program history a doubles pair earned All-American status.

Next Up
The Demon Deacons will remain at home as they prepare to host ITA Kickoff Weekend from Jan. 24-25. The winners of Wake Forest/Charlotte (5 p.m.) and North Carolina/Memphis (2 p.m.) will meet on Saturday for a chance to book a spot at ITA National Indoors next month.
