Deacs Close Out Opening Weekend with 7-0 Sweep Against ETSU

The Demon Deacons finish their opening weekend undefeated in doubles play as graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate improve to 3-0 as a duo.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team (2-1, 0-0 ACC) closed out their opening weekend homestand with a dominant 7-0 sweep over visiting East Tennessee State (0-2, 0-0 SoCon) on Monday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
In doubles action, graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate picked up a 6-2 victory over ETSU's Rage/Alexandrova at third doubles. Junior Nevena Carton and freshman Kady Tannenbaum, who came into the spring season ranked as the no. 44 doubles team, clinched the doubles point for the Deacs with a 6-4 win over Rovira/Millan.
With the two wins on Monday, the Demon Deacons are now 6-0 in doubles play over their opening three matches, with Pate and Zhang moving to 3-0 as a duo.
In singles play, Pate picked up her first singles victory of the season with a win over Alessandra Caceres (6-2, 6-0) at third singles. Tannenbaum and Blanch followed up with nearly simultaneous wins to clinch the match for the Deacs, with Tannenbaum defeating Julia Millan (6-1, 6-3) at fourth singles, and Blanch picking up the straight-set victory over Jana Rovira (6-3, 6-1) at second singles.
Carton also picked up her first singles victory of the year as she defeated Daniela Rivera (6-1, 6-4) at first singles, before freshman Brianna Baldi picked up her second-win of her freshman campaign at fifth singles, defeating Ralitsa Alexandrova 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.
Sophomore Sankavi Gownder closed out the sweep for the Demon Deacons with a tightly-contested victory over Ksenija Rage (7-5, 7-5) at sixth singles.
With the victory over the Buccaneers, head coach Jeff Wyshner secured his 189th career victory as the head coach of the Demon Deacons. Wyshner, who is currently in his 15th season at the helm for the Deacs, is now only two wins away from tying the all-time wins record for a head coach in program history.
The Deacs will now head on the road for the first time this season as they take on Liberty on Friday, before returning home for a doubleheader against Old Dominion and Elon.
