No. 5 Wake Forest Extends Winning Streak to Double Digits with 9-2 Victory over Queens
10/10/2025 7:17:00 PM | Field Hockey
Junior Mia Schoenbeck and sophomore Sarah Mudd both recorded hat tricks for the Demon Deacons.
With the victory, Wake Forest (10-2, 4-0 ACC) extended its winning streak to 10 games, the program's longest since 2008, when the Demon Deacons advanced to the NCAA Semifinals.
The Deacs also improved to a perfect 6-0 record at Kentner Stadium this season, again for the first time since 2008.
Additionally, the nine goals mark the first time Wake has scored seven or more goals three times in a season since 2008, having achieved this feat against UMass Lowell and Longwood earlier this season, with nine and seven goals scored, respectively. The 44 goals this season ties for the second most in the country pending Friday's results.
Following junior Mia Schoenbeck's penalty corner goal in the opening quarter, Wake Forest's attack corner unit has now found the back of the cage in every game during the 10-match streak, contributing 17 of the team's 44 goals this season.
Schoenbeck added three goals against Queens to give the LaGrange, Ky., native 13 goals on the season. She and sophomore Lauren Storey are the first pair of Demon Deacon teammates to have double-digit goals since Grashoff and Nicola Pluta in the 2017 season.
After scoring just one goal as a freshman, Sarah Mudd has come on strong this season for the Demon Deacons, contributing multiple goals in two of the last three matches. The sophomore netted her first career hat trick against the Royals (2-9) to bring her total to seven on the year.
How It Happened
- The Demon Deacons struck early as Schoenbeck scored her 11th goal of the season just 3:50 into the contest, finishing a setup from Storey and Mia Montag off a penalty corner.
- Wake Forest dominated possession, firing 12 shots and earning four corners in the frame.
- Queens goalkeeper Madison DeStefano kept the visitors in it with seven saves, as Wake led 1-0 after the opening 15 minutes.
- Wake Forest's offense exploded for three goals in the span of five minutes to break the game open.
- Sarah Mudd doubled the lead in the 20th minute, finishing off a feed from Logan Marthinus.
- Less than three minutes later, Faye Janse tallied her third goal of the season, followed by Ava Moore's first goal of the year in the 25th minute to make it 4-0.
- Queens responded before the half with a goal, but Wake carried a commanding 4-1 lead into halftime, after outshooting the Royals 23-1 through two quarters.
- The Deacs continued their relentless attack, pouring in five goals in the third period.
- Mudd opened the second-half scoring at 30:34 for her second of the game and sixth of the season.
- Moments later, Storey and Mudd found the back of the cage again, with Mudd completing her hat trick in the 33rd minute off a Schoenbeck assist.
- Schoenbeck added two more goals in the 35th and 43rd minutes, bringing her total to a team-leading 13 on the year and completing her first hat trick of the season.
- Wake Forest outshot Queens 12-0 in the quarter to extend the lead to 9-1.
- Queens managed its second goal of the day in the 48th minute.
- Wake rotated its lineup, with redshirt sophomore Caroline Grebe entering in goal for the closing minutes.
- The Deacs continued to pressure offensively, adding six more shots in the final period, including chances from Georgia Pollock and Reabetswe Phume, but the score remained 9-2 at the final horn.
- Wake Forest picked up their 10-straight win.
Quotables
"What a great team victory. It was great to see the variety of goal scorers. I thought that was tremendous, to spread the wealth, and some of the goals we scored were brilliant. I'm happy that we were able to rotate players in to give some different looks. We're just continuing to grow our game. Today's emphasis was to not get bored doing the simple stuff. It works. Defensively, we'll do some tidying up, but happy with the result and how this team keeps growing together." – Head Coach Jen Averill
