No. 7 Demon Deacons Stay Unbeaten at Home with Overtime Win over Miami (OH)

The Demon Deacons improve to 4-0 in overtime games this season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – For the third time this season, junior Mia Schoenbeck provided the overtime heroics, as the No. 7 Wake Forest field hockey team won its ninth-straight game with a 2-1 victory against Miami (OH) on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

With the win, Wake Forest (9-2, 4-0 ACC) holds its longest winning streak since 2008, a season that saw the Demon Deacons advance to the NCAA Semifinals, and are now 5-0 at Kentner this season.

Schoenbeck's game-winner marked her third overtime goal of the season, as the LaGrange, Ky. native joined Lauren Storey in double figures for goals this year.

Proving to be one of the biggest offensive threats in the country, sophomore Lauren Storey sparked the scoring with her 11th goal of the season, finding the back of the cage from the top of the circle.

With Storey's penalty corner goal in the second quarter, Wake Forest's attack corner group has now scored in every contest during the nine-game win streak and has accounted for 16 of the Demon Deacons' 35 goals this season.

Back-to-back ACC Defensive Player of the Week Ellie Todd hasn't allowed a goal over the last two matches, finishing with three saves against the RedHawks (7-4, 3-1 MAC).

How It Happened
  • Wake Forest and Miami traded early opportunities in a fast-paced opening frame.
  • Todd made the first save of the day on a RedHawks shot in the second minute to keep the match level.
  • The Demon Deacons fired two shots, both from Storey, but neither found the target as the teams remained scoreless through 15 minutes.
  • Wake Forest broke the deadlock early in the period. Off a penalty corner in the 17th minute, Storey finished a feed from Mia Montag to give the Deacs a 1-0 advantage — her 11th goal of the season.
  • Todd added another key stop in the 28th minute to deny Miami after back-to-back corners.
  • Wake carried the 1-0 lead into halftime, holding a 5-4 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard.
  • Miami equalized less than a minute into the second half, converting a penalty stroke by Wearren at 30:51 to even the match at 1-1.
  • The Deacs regrouped defensively, as Todd returned in goal and made two critical saves, including one off a penalty corner late in the frame.
  • Despite limited scoring chances, Wake controlled possession and entered the final quarter still tied.
  • Wake Forest pressed forward, creating three shots and a pair of penalty corners.
  • Faye Janse had two attempts turned aside by Miami goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken, while Lena Keller's shot in the 57th minute was blocked in front.
  • The Deacs' pressure forced the RedHawks to defend deep, sending the match into overtime tied 1-1.
  • Wake Forest wasted little time finding the golden goal. After Storey's initial effort was saved, junior Mia Schoenbeck buried the rebound at 61:46 to clinch the 2-1 victory.
  • The score marked Schoenbeck's 10th goal of the season and third game-winner, extending the Deacs' win streak and sealing another dramatic finish at Kentner Stadium.
Quotables
"
We knew from our film review just how possession-oriented Miami was. They work the ball right, middle, left, and quite honestly, put on a clinic today. It's a part of our game that we want to expand and grow as well. We have the players to do it, and so we just have to get into a rhythm with that. Having said that, the schedule is unbelievably challenging this year. While we did what we needed to do to complete it, there's still growth, and I'm just incredibly proud of the resilience of our squad to play two really tough games and to get great results out of it." – Head Coach Jen Averill
