No. 6 Wake Forest Falls at No. 4 Virginia

10/31/2025 7:58:00 PM | Field Hockey

The Demon Deacons found the back of the cage three times against a UVA defense that entered the match allowing just six goals this season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 6 Wake Forest field hockey team closed out the regular season on Friday night, falling 5-3 to No. 4 Virginia at Turf Field.

Despite the setback, the Demon Deacons (15-3, 7-1 ACC) secured a share of their first ACC Regular Season title since 2006 and will await their seed for the 2025 ACC Field Hockey Championship starting on Tuesday, Nov. 4, pending other results around the league tonight.

Two of the Demon Deacons' three goals came off penalty corners, extending Wake Forest's streak of scoring off corners to 16 straight matches. The APC unit has now accounted for 29 of the Deacs' 66 total goals this fall.

Wake Forest found success against a Virginia (14-1, 7-1 ACC) defense that entered Friday's match having allowed just six goals through the first 14 matches of the season.

Senior forward Amelia Frey opened the scoring for the Demon Deacons, finding the back of the cage for the fourth time this season, surpassing her previous season high of three goals as a sophomore.

Junior Faye Janse scored for the third time in the last two matches, giving her 14 points on six goals and two assists this season.

Junior Mia Schoenbeck scored her ACC-leading 22nd goal of the season and added an assist to bring her to 49 points on the year.

How It Happened
  • Both teams started with strong defensive intensity, combining for just one shot on goal in the opening 10 minutes.
  • Virginia capitalized on a late penalty corner, scoring in the final minute of the quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Wake Forest's defense, led by Ellie Todd, made a pair of early stops to limit the damage and keep it a one-goal margin heading into the second.
  • The Deacs earned three consecutive penalty corners midway through the period but were unable to convert, as UVA's goalkeeper and a defensive save kept Wake Forest off the board.
  • The Cavaliers doubled their advantage, converting on a penalty stroke to make it 2-0.
  • Despite four total shots in the quarter and strong circle pressure, Wake Forest entered halftime trailing 2-0.
  • Virginia extended its lead less than two minutes to make it 3-0.
  • Wake Forest answered quickly, as senior Amelia Frey got the Deacs on the board with an unassisted goal at 35:28 to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • The Cavaliers responded to restore their three-goal cushion at 4-1.
  • Wake closed the period with sustained offensive pressure, recording five shots and two corners, but was unable to close the gap.
  • Virginia added another goal in the 46th minute, making it 5-1.
  • Wake Forest rallied with a pair of quick goals less than two minutes apart.
  • The Deacs continued to press, firing 10 shots and earning seven corners in the final frame, but Virginia made four crucial saves to hold off the comeback attempt.
  • Despite outshooting Virginia 21-13 and earning a 12-4 advantage in corners, Wake Forest fell 5-3 in a hard-fought regular-season finale in Charlottesville.
Quotables
"Unfortunately, just a little too late from the squad tonight. We didn't attack and didn't press early and often enough. Once we started to create some tempo defensively and create turnovers, we were able to capitalize on them.

I'm incredibly proud of this group for the 2025 regular season campaign. I would have liked this game to go a little bit differently, not only in the goals we allowed, but also in being able to manage each quarter. We will use the film to identify areas where we can continue to improve, and I look forward to getting to Louisville and getting back to work." – Head Coach Jen Averill
