WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 6 Wake Forest field hockey team fell 3-1 to No. 10 Syracuse in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 ACC Field Hockey Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Wake Forest (15-4, 7-1 ACC) entered the postseason as the three seed after capturing a share of the ACC regular-season title, the program's first since 2006. Despite outshooting Syracuse 15-10 and holding a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners, the Demon Deacons were unable to overcome an early deficit in a tightly contested quarterfinal matchup.
Junior Mia Schoenbeck, the 2025 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, converted a penalty stroke in the third quarter for her 23rd goal of the season, continuing her dominant campaign as the ACC's top scorer. Additionally, Schoenbeck becomes the first Demon Deacon with over 50 points in a single season since Jule Grashoff's 54 during the 2018 campaign.
How It Happened
"We were missing some anticipation on defense. I thought we played way too lethargically on that end in the first half. I was super proud of our ability to create opportunities on the offensive end, and we could have finished this game. I think the disappointment that everybody feels is that you had a tremendous amount of goals left on the field today for Wake Forest. I know the players are disappointed, but I look forward to the selection show and making some corrections." – Head Coach Jen Averill
