Last Time Out
The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams booked their spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships following a pair of strong performances at the NCAA Southeast Regional at the Panorama Farms Course in Earlysville, Va. last Friday.

The men's team secured their first NCAA Southeast Regional title since 2021 to earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. All five of Wake Forest's top five runners finished inside the top-25 to earn All-Region honors.

Junior Rocky Hansen continued his outstanding season as he claimed the individual title after clocking a time of 29:10.4. Redshirt junior Daniel Winter and junior Charlie Sprott both secured top-10 finishes, with Sprott taking ninth after posting a time of 29:49.3, while Winter claimed 10th place with a time of 29:51.0 to wrap up his first race of the 2025 season. Junior Hunter Jones added another solid performance as he crossed the line in 30:01.8 for a 16th-place result, while redshirt junior Joe O'Brien rounded out the top five finishers for the Deacs as he finished in 19th, clocking a time of 30:07.9.

Meanwhile, the women's team placed fifth in the 6k championship race behind All-Region performances by juniors Angelina Perez and Brooke Wilson. Wilson led the way for the Deacs as she finished in seventh place at 19:23.8 to secure her second-consecutive All-Region honor. Meanwhile, Wilson finished the race in 19:55.7 to secure a 17th place performance and her third-straight All-Region honor.

Last Year at the NCAA Cross Country Championships
The Wake Forest men's team claimed seventh-place at last season's edition of the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Madison, Wisc. Charlie Sprott was the lone All-American for the Deacs as the Brisbane, Australia, native finished the race in 32nd after posting a time of 29:21.6. Sophomore JoJo Jourdon joined Sprott inside the top-50 as he closed out his freshman campaign with a 47th place finish.

Rocking with Rocky
Junior Rocky Hansen has been nothing short of unstoppable this season as he has claimed three individual titles. The Hendersonville, N.C., native started his season with a first-place finish at the Panorama Farms Invitational, before claiming the ACC Individual Championship at the ACC Cross Country Championships. Hansen followed those two wins by claiming the NCAA Southeast Regional crown at Panorama Farms last weekend.

In addition to his three individual wins, Hansen has set new course records at both the Panorama Farms Invitational and the ACC Cross Country Championships, with his performance at the ACC Championships breaking the old course record at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park by 40 seconds.

Women's Cross Country Making History
Under the direction of associate head coach Ashley Bastron, the Wake Forest women's cross country team is returning to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006. This season, the Demon Deacons secured six top-10 finishes, including three team victories at the Queen City Invite, the Spartan Classic, and the Arturo Barrios Invitational. Wake Forest also earned a tenth place finish at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo., where the Demon Deacons had three runners place inside the top-50.

The John Hayes Era
Since arriving in Winston-Salem in 2016, Hayes has helped the men's cross country team grow into a national powerhouse. Under his leadership, the Demon Deacons have claimed two ACC titles in 2022 and 2024, resulting in Hayes earning ACC Coach of the Year honors both years. Hayes was also named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach Of The Year four of the last five seasons (2020-22, 2024).

Along with their success in the ACC, the Deacs have also earned a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in five consecutive seasons, extending the longest streak in program history. During this five-year stretch, Wake Forest has finished inside the top-10 twice, including a fifth-place finish in 2022. Additionally, the Deacs have claimed two NCAA Southeast Regional titles in 2021 and 2025 under Hayes.

Over the course of his tenure with the Deacs, Hayes has produced six All-Americans, including Zach Facioni, the first three-time All-American in program history. In addition, Hayes coached Rocky Hansen to the Demon Deacons' first men's ACC Individual Title since 2001 at the 2025 ACC Cross Country Championships. Hayes has also coached four ACC Freshman of the Year performers, including back-to-back winners in Charlie Sprott (2023) and JoJo Jourdon (2024), and 15 All-ACC honorees.
