Deacs Look to Close Perfect Week Sunday Against Hampton

The Demon Deacons will look to improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season when the Deacs won the first seven games of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After winning the first two games to start the season, the Wake Forest women's basketball team will look to close out a perfect opening week Sunday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, playing host to Hampton for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
 
The Demon Deacons (2-0) are coming off a 37-point victory over Presbyterian on Thursday where the Deacs scored 46 points in the paint. For the second-straight game, Wake Forest was led by a standout performance from freshman guard Milan Brown who finished as the Demon Deacons leading scorer and rebounder, totaling 14 points and seven rebounds. Through two games this season, she is averaging 12.0 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game. As a team, the Deacs have been averaging 26.5 free throw attempts per game which is 12.2 more per game than last season. Additionally, Wake Forest have averaged 47.5 rebounds per game which is an increase of 16.7 rebounds from last season.
 
On Wednesday night, the Pirates (1-0) opened up their season with a resounding 105-21 victory over the Apprentice School. Hampton forced 48 turnovers including 23 steals which led to 49 points on the other end of the floor. Four Pirates including three starters finished the night in double figures led by junior guard Kiarra McElrath who netted 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Fellow guard Olivia Smith finished the night 10 of Hampton's 26 assists.
 
Tipoff for Sunday is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) at LJVM Coliseum.

Salute to Service
With Veterans Day coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 11, the game on Sunday will be the Salute to Service, honoring all of those who have served in any branch of the military.
 
The game will feature special promotional reads, photo rotation of local veterans on videoboards, and an in-stand recognition of veterans during a timeout or quarter break. 
 
All fans in attendance will receive a small American flag to join us in showing appreciation for their sacrifice and service.
 
Veterans, first responders, nurses and more will receive free admission and a guest with them will receive a $5 ticket.

Assists On Made Baskets
Wake Forest tallied 18 total assists against Presbyterian Thursday on 28 made baskets, with sophomore forward Kennedy Moore reaching a career-high four assists of her own against the Blue Hose. 
 
In two games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 30 assists on 50 made baskets (60.0 percent).

The Deacs did an excellent job of moving the ball last season, as they assisted on 394 of 667 made baskets this season (59.1 pct.). This was the highest assist percentage in the Gebbia era and the assist percentage ranks in the top 70 percent in the nation according to HerHoopStats.

In 2023-24, the Deacs assisted 404 of 694 made field goals (58.2 percent). 

Forcing Them Over 
The Deacs forced the Blue Hose into 14 turnovers on Thursday, of which led to 16 points off turnovers in the game. The Deacs have forced 10 or more takeaways 69 times in the last 73 games. The 73-game stretch goes back to January of 2022. 
 
Through two games, the Demon Deacons have forced 13.0 turnovers per game.
 
Converting From The Line 
Wake Forest extended their success at the line and went 17-for-23 against Presbyterian. Redshirt-junior Raven Prescott recorded a team-high 5-for-6 performance to headline the night. 
 
In two games this season, Wake Forest is 37-of-53 (69.8 percent) at the charity stripe, averaging 26.5 free throw attempts per game.
 
The Demon Deacons shot at least 70 percent or from the line in 17 of the 29 games of the 2024-25 season, including doing so in six of the last seven games. For the second-straight season, the Deacs had one of the top 10 free throw shooting percentages in program history, ranking sixth as they knocked down 294 of 414 shots from the stripe:

  • The Demon Deacons had 18 assists on 28 made baskets (64.3 percent) including five players with two or more assists in the win. Additionally, all 12 Deacs recorded a point and pulled one rebound in the victory.
  • Wake Forest held Presbyterian to just 18 points in the second half and marked their largest margin of victory since last season's opening night win over Queens. 
  • Freshman guard Milan Brown led the Deacs with 14 points and recorded back-to-back double digit games as a freshman for the first time since Madisyn Jordan on Nov. 18 against BYU and Nov. 20 against Saint Louis.
  • Earning career-highs in two separate categories, sophomore forward Kennedy Moore recorded seven rebounds and a team best four assists against the Blue Hose.
