After falling to South Carolina in the opening match, the Deacs bounced back by sweeping the Catamounts, 4-0.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team (8-3, 0-0 ACC) opened their six-match road trip with a Saturday doubleheader against South Carolina (5-3, 0-0 SEC) and Western Carolina (4-5, 0-0 SoCon). The Demon Deacons split their two matches at the Carolina Tennis Center, falling to the Gamecocks, 4-1, while sweeping the Catamounts in their second match of the day.
The Demon Deacons picked up their only point against South Carolina in doubles play. Following a defeat at second doubles, graduate student Makayla Mills and redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch evened the doubles match with a 6-4 win over Buchwald/Hamner at first doubles. Graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate clinched the doubles point for the Deacs moments later, defeating Bergqvist Larsson/Malkin at third doubles (7-5) in a tightly-contested match.
Wake Forest would bounce back in their second match as they defeated the Catamounts, 4-0.
The Deacs would once again claim the doubles point, as junior Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum swept Redondo/Samola at second singles (6-0), before Zhang/Pate clinched the point again with a 6-1 victory over Osadova/Perez on court three.
The Demon Deacons are now an impressive 22-3 in doubles matches this season, while Zhang/Pate improved their team-best record to 8-0 following their two victories on Saturday.
In singles action, sophomore Sankavi Gownder and freshman Brianna Baldi came up with nearly simultaneous wins in their respective matches to increase the Demon Deacon lead to 3-0. Gownder, who now sits with a team-best 8-2 record, got the Deacs going with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fourth singles over Angela Perez. Baldi followed up with her own straight-set victory against Andrea Redondo at fifth singles (6-3, 6-2).
Junior Jingyi Li, who played in just her second singles match of the season on Saturday, capped off the sweep for the Demon Deacons as she defeated Zoe Liu at sixth singles (6-4, 6-3).
The Deacs will continue their road stretch next weekend, first facing off against the Naval Academy on Friday, before heading to Williamsburg, Virginia for a matchup against William & Mary on Sunday.

From Coach Wyshner
"Mixed result day for us. I thought we were in good shape against South Carolina after winning the doubles point with some really solid wins at first and third doubles. Unfortunately, we couldn't carry that momentum with us into singles. It seemed that we couldn't convert on any of the big points. Credit to South Carolina though. They were coming off of two tough losses on the road, and they responded today at our expense. I'm proud of how we responded and got the job done in the second match against Western Carolina. We needed to sit out a couple of players in that second match, which meant that there was a lot more pressure on us in certain spots. Huge credit to Sankavi [Gownder] and Brianna [Baldi] for taking care of business. Jingyi [Li] was really solid for us as well and got that clinching point today. We only have one more week of non-conference play this season, so next weekend's matches on the road are important for us." - head coach Jeff Wyshner
