No. 1 Demon Deacons to Open Conference Play Against Stanford and Cal

Wake Forest will also host a non-conference clash with NC Wesleyan on Sunday.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the midst of the best start to a season in program history, the No. 1-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will look to carry the momentum into conference play with ACC newcomers No. 6 Stanford and No. 22 Cal paying a visit to the Wake Forest Tennis Center this weekend.
The Demon Deacons (16-0, 0-0 ACC) will take on the Cardinal on Friday, Feb. 28 with first serve slated for 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Deacs will face the Golden Bears at noon before hosting a non-conference match against NC Wesleyan at 4 p.m.

Hot Start
With the doubleheader sweep over UNC Wilmington and Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, the Demon Deacons have now broken the program record for most wins to open a campaign, surpassing the previous record of 14 set by the 2018 National Championship team. Wake Forest is also a combined 57-20 in singles and 32-5 in doubles so far this season, taking all 16 doubles points.

The Matchup - Stanford
The No. 6 Cardinal come into the weekend with an 8-2 record, with both losses coming to TCU. They most recently picked up a 4-0 victory over No. 36 UC Irvine. Last season, Wake Forest and Stanford met in the Super Regionals as the Demon Deacons knocked off the Cardinal, 4-1, and reached the Elite Eight for the fourth time in program history.
Wake Forest holds a 3-1 record over Stanford, all four matches have come since 2017.

The Golden Bears enter the weekend with a perfect 7-0 record and will open conference play against NC State on Friday before coming to Winston-Salem. Last season, Cal went 10-10 overall with a 3-3 mark in PAC-12 play.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Last Time Out
On the first outside match day of the 2025 season, the No. 1-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team picked up a pair of 5-2 victories over UNC Wilmington and Gardner-Webb at the Wake Forest Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon.
Playing together for the first time as a pair, junior DK Suresh Ekambaram and freshman Charlie Robertson notched two impressive victories over UNCW's Mallory/Huen (6-3) and Gardner-Webb's Dias/Schreiber (6-1).
The No. 75-ranked pairing of graduate students Ioannis Xilas and Franco Capalbo clinched the doubles point against the Seahawks with a 6-4 win over Steffen/de Gabriele. The two are now tied for the team-lead with eight doubles wins this campaign (Pow/Tacchi).
The Deacs remained perfect in doubles against the Runnin' Bulldogs as sophomore Martin Mazev and freshman Cornelius Shalmi took down Lemieux-Monette/Cressoni (6-3). It marked the first doubles win of Shalmi's collegiate career.
In singles, Suresh clinched the first win of the day for Wake Forest with a comeback victory over UNCW's Harold Huens (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) on court one.
Sophomore Luca Pow notched a pair of victories on the day and now has a team-best 12 wins this campaign. He breezed through UNCW's Alex de Gabriele (6-2, 6-1) and Gardner-Webb's Numa Lemieux-Monette (6-2, 6-2) in straight sets and extended his winning streak to seven matches.
Xilas joined Pow as the second Wake Forest player to reach double-digit wins this season as he picked up a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win over Sam Nicholson (UNCW) before a 6-2, 6-2 match-clinching victory over Eduardo Dias (GWU).
Freshman Joaquin Guilleme was the third Demon Deacon to pick up multiple wins on Tuesday. He defeated Trey Mallory of UNCW (6-4, 6-0) in straight-sets and notched a comeback win against Gardner-Webb's Alexandre Bergeron, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7). Guilleme is now 4-0 in singles this season.
Graduate student Harry Thursfield improved to 3-0 on the year as he cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gardner-Webb's Alex Lepine.
The Demon Deacons are now 6-0 all-time against the Bulldogs and 4-0 against UNC Wilmington.
ITA Rankings
The Demon Deacons were tabbed as the best team in the nation in the latest ITA poll, one of seven ACC teams in the top 25. Individually, Wake Forest has three singles players and five doubles pairs ranked.

The Bresky Era
Since arriving at Wake Forest, head coach Tony Bresky has enjoyed a decorated career, winning ITA National Coach of the Year in 2018, along with garnering ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2013 and 2016. Additionally, Bresky has been tabbed ITA Regional Coach of the Year on five occasions (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2024). Of note, Bresky led Wake Forest to its first-ever national title in 2018, after accumulating a 33-2 mark. Most recently, he led Wake Forest to its second ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Individually, Bresky has coached two ACC Players of the Year (Noah Rubin and Melios Efstathiou), along with 35 All-ACC selections and 10 ITA Singles All-Americans.
During his tenure at Wake Forest, Bresky has amassed 345 wins. Of note, early in 2023 with a victory over No. 6 Tennessee, Bresky became the winningest coach in program history, surpassing the legendary Jim Leighton.
