Deacs Look to Return to Winning Ways with Duo of Home Matches

The Demon Deacons will take on Furman on Friday before facing off against James Madison on Sunday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team will be looking to return to winning ways this upcoming weekend as they return home to the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center against Furman and James Madison.

The Deacs will open their weekend with a match against the undefeated Paladins on Friday, with first serve slated for 4 p.m. Wake will finish out their weekend on Sunday at noon as they take on the Dukes for the first time since 1987.

Furman and James Madison will also play a neutral site match against each other on Saturday, with first serve scheduled for noon.

All three matches are free for all spectators and will also be live streamed on Playsight. Results will also be updated live here.

Last Time Out
The Deacs saw their five-match win streak come to an end this past weekend, falling to Marshall in a non-conference road clash 4-3.

Wake took an early advantage in the match with a sweep in doubles action. Graduate student Makayla Mills and redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch picked up a 6-3 win at first doubles, before graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate secured the doubles point with a 7-5 comeback victory at third doubles.

Pate and sophomore Sankavi Gownder picked up consolation victories in singles play after the Thundering Herd clinched the match, with Gownder winning in straight-sets (6-2, 6-1) at sixth singles, and Pate finishing off a three-set match at third singles, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Doubles Dominance
The Demon Deacons have been dominant in doubles matches this season as they have gone 14-0 in doubles play through their first seven matches. 

Zhang/Pate lead the Demon Deacons with a 6-0 record on the season, while junior Nevena Carton and freshman Kady Tannenbaum are 5-0 as a duo. Blanch/Mills round out Wake's undefeated doubles record, improving to 3-0 at first doubles following their victory at Marshall last weekend.

Off to a Hot Start
The Deacs have gotten off to a hot start in singles play with an overall record of 27-11. Gownder, Tannenbaum, and freshman Brianna Baldi lead the Deacs with five singles victories on the season. Pate and Carton have also been solid in singles play with four wins each, while No. 73 Blanch rounds out the top of the Wake lineup with a 3-2 record.

Win No. 192 and Counting
Head coach Jeff Wyshner became the all-time winningest head coach in Wake Forest women's tennis program history earlier this season after defeating Elon for his 192nd career victory at Wake.

Under Wyshner's leadership, the Demon Deacons have amassed a 192-181 overall record and have made eight-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Wyshner has also helped produce three All-Americans during his 15-year tenure, including Singles All-American Carolyn Campana (2021), and Doubles All-Americans MC Meredith and Eliza Omiru (2020) and Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth (2022).

Scouting the Opposition
Furman enters Friday with an undefeated 4-0 start to the season while going a combined 25-9 in doubles and singles action. Furman is one of the most-experienced teams that the Deacs have faced this season thus far, as six of their seven players are seniors.

The Paladins are led by sophomore Macy Hitchcock, who leads Furman with a 4-0 record in singles matches. Hitchcock is also 4-0 in doubles play alongside senior Jess Dawson. Seniors Ellie Schulson and Sara Snyder are also 4-0 as a duo at the first doubles spot.

James Madison comes into this weekend with an 0-5 record, with all five of their teams coming against ACC opponents, including No. 11 Duke, No. 6 North Carolina, and No. 9 Virginia.

In their most recent match against Virginia Tech, junior Daria Munteanu picked up the lone victory for the Dukes with a 6-3, 6-2 win at second singles.

The Demon Deacons will start their six-match road trip next Saturday in a doubleheader against South Carolina and Western Carolina in Columbia, S.C.

The Deacs will square off against South Carolina at 10:30 a.m. before facing Western Carolina shortly afterwards.
