This marks the second match play victory of the year for the Wake Forest women’s golf team, also picking up a match play win earlier this year at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup.
AIKEN, S.C. - In a thrilling final day of competition at Old Barnwell Club, the No. 9 Wake Forest women's golf defeated No. 4 South Carolina in the first place match at the Old Barnwell Derby Tuesday afternoon in Aiken, S.C.
The Demon Deacons trailed to begin the day but soon found momentum to put themselves in the lead. Senior Carolina Chacarra worked her way out of a tied match, going 1UP on the ninth hole, a lead that she would not relinquish for the rest of the day.
Freshman Chloe Kovelesky was tied in her match through hole 10, giving the Deacs some cushion as they worked their way through the second half of the day.
The Gamecocks scored the first point of the day, but Chacarra answered with a point of her own, capturing a 2&1 win on hole No. 17. After exchanging back-to-back leads throughout the morning, junior Anne-Sterre den Dunnen grabbed the Deacs second point of the day, after leading her own match from hole seven onward.
Before entering the back nine, Wake Forest led the match 4-1 but would have to battle hard to secure the win. Graduate Sky Sload clinched the victory for Wake Forest on hole 17, and finished 2&1 after taking the lead on hole three.
This marked the second time that the Demon Deacons have defeated South Carolina in match play competition, claiming a 4.5-0.5 victory over the Gamecocks at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup during the fall season.
Since the 2023 National Championship run, the Wake Forest women's golf team has a 16-2 record in match play competition including having a perfect 5-0 mark in postseason matches.
Coach's Comments
"This is the first time we've played at this tournament so to play as well as we did with this competition and on a venue that is unbelievable. I'm really proud of these young ladies. I'm proud of how they came down and worked when we needed either a half or a point. Every single person on the team contributed to the win and that always makes for a great drive back." - head coach Kim Lewellen
