Juniors Nevena Carton and Whitley Pate picked up simultaneous victories at first and fourth singles to secure the win over the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, KY – The Wake Forest women's tennis team closed out their six-match road stretch on Sunday afternoon as they picked up their first ACC win of the season by defeating Louisville (5-4, 0-3 ACC), 5-1.
For the 14th time this season, the Demon Deacons (11-4, 1-1 ACC) claimed the doubles point to take the early advantage in the match. Graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate continued their undefeated season, improving to 11-0 on the season with a comfortable 6-1 victory over Miret/Peresypkina at third doubles. Junior Nevena Carton and freshman Kady Tannenbaum closed out the doubles point for the Deacs after rattling off four-consecutive points to take their match at second doubles against Gretowski/Davis, 7-5.
The Cardinals did get a consolation win at first doubles after the doubles point was clinched.
With their win, Carton and Tannenbaum eclipsed the 10-win mark for the season and now sit at 10-2 as a team. Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons are now a combined 28-5 in doubles matches following their 2-1 performance on Sunday.
After Louisville evened up the match with a victory at sixth singles, Zhang gave the Deacs the lead back with a straight-set victory over Elina Noguero at third singles (6-3, 7-6 (7-2)). This marked the McKinney, Texas, native's second win of the season, both of which came over the weekend.
Redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch, who came into Sunday as the No. 95 singles player in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), extended the Demon Deacon lead to 3-1 moments later with a three-set victory at second singles over Lika Peresypkina (6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3).
Wake Forest secured the 5-1 victory over Louisville with simultaneous, third-set wins from Carton and Pate. After dropping the first set at fourth singles, Pate battled back to defeat Allie Gretkowski, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. At the same time, Carton used a dominant final set to defeat Alice Otis, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
The victory over the Cardinals marked the conclusion of the Demon Deacons' six-match road stretch, where the Deacs went a combined 4-2.
The win also moved head coach Jeff Wyshner two victories away from becoming the first head coach in women's tennis program history to eclipse 200 career-victories at Wake Forest. Wyshner became the all-time wins leader earlier this season and is now 198-183 with the Demon Deacons.
The Deacs will now return home for the first time in four weeks to kick off their home ACC slate next weekend. Wake Forest opens with a battle against top-ranked Virginia on Friday before facing off against No. 31 Virginia Tech.

From Coach Wyshner
"Really proud of the group today. We were able to push a couple of matches to third sets after dropping some first sets. We were really good in key moments, especially late in the second sets and in the third sets. Every road match in the ACC is a huge challenge and we got an important win today. Now, we'll get ready for an exciting weekend at home next week" - head coach Jeff Wyshner
