Deacs Drop ACC Home Opener Against No. 2 Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – For the first time in a month, the Wake Forest women's tennis team returned to Leighton Courts for their first ACC home match of the season on Friday as they faced off against No. 2 Virginia. The Demon Deacons (11-5, 1-2 ACC) fought hard, but ultimately fell to the Cavaliers (12-2, 4-0 ACC), 4-1.

The Deacs dropped the doubles point for only the second time this season as the Cavaliers took both courts two and three. Junior Nevena Carton and freshman Kady Tannenbaum evened their match over on court one (5-5) before the point was clinched.

Carton claimed the lone point for the Demon Deacons as she claimed a top-25 upset over No. 22 Sara Ziodaro at first singles (6-4, 6-4). The win marked the Locust, N.J., native's first career victory over a top-25 opponent as Carton improved to 9-3 on the season.

Wake Forest will now look to bounce back on Sunday with another home contest against No. 37 Virginia Tech. First serve against the Hokies is set for noon at Leighton Courts.

How It Happened

Virginia took the lead in the doubles match with a win at third doubles.
The Cavaliers secured the doubles point with a win at second doubles.
- Carton and Tannenbaum evened the match at 5-5 on court one prior to the doubles point being clinched.
The Demon Deacons kept within striking distance on all six courts through the first 30 minutes of singles action.
Virginia claimed the first set on courts three and five.
Carton recorded a 6-4 first set victory on court one to take the advantage in her match.
The Cavaliers added another first set on courts two, four, and six.
Virginia extended their lead with a victory at third singles.
- The Cavaliers added another at second singles to make it 3-0.
Carton got the Deacs on the board with a top-25 upset over No. 22 Sara Ziodato at first singles (6-4, 6-4).
Virginia clinched the match with a win at fifth singles as the Deacs fell 4-1.

"Good effort today. We went in a bit short-handed with a couple players out today and I was really impressed with how everyone stepped up and didn't let that affect our effort. We mixed some things with some new doubles teams and those new pairings played well today. We'll get ready for a big showdown against Virginia Tech on Sunday.
