Freshman Kady Tannenbaum’s three-set victory clinched the 4-3 win for the Deacs to close out their first ACC weekend at home.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind a clutch, three-set victory from freshman Kady Tannenbaum, the No. 35 Wake Forest women's tennis team closed out its first ACC weekend at home on Sunday with a hard fought, 4-3 victory over No. 37 Virginia Tech (9-6, 0-5 ACC) at Leighton Courts.

With the match tied at 3-3, the Commack, N.Y., freshman secured her first clinch of her Wake Forest career with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory at fourth singles against Arina Gamretkaia. Tannenbaum has been one of the shining underclassmen for the Deacs this season as she now holds a 9-5 record in singles.

The Demon Deacons (12-5, 2-2 ACC) took an early 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point for the 15th time as the team improved to a combined 30-7 in doubles matches this season. Tannenbaum and junior Nevena Carton got the Deacs rolling with a win over No. 60 Cartledge/Uslu at first doubles (6-2). The win marked the duo's 11th win of the season, which is tied for the most doubles wins on the team.

Graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Jingyi Li clinched the doubles point for the Deacs with a combeack victory over Aksu/Mulready at third doubles (6-4). Meanwhile, graduate student Makayla Mills and redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch clawed their way back to tie their match at first doubles prior to the clinch by Li/Zhang.

After Virginia Tech tied the match with a win at , Carton and Zhang picked up back-to-back straight-set victories to put the Deacs up 3-1.

Zhang broke the tie with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory against Semra Aksu at third doubles to move to 3-3 on the season. Meanwhile, Carton closed out her incredible weekend with a top-30 victory over No. 26 Ozlem Uslu at first singles (6-3, 6-2), putting the Deacs one win away from the match.

The win on Sunday marked the Locust, N.J., native's second top-30 win of the weekend, having defeated No. 22 Sara Ziodato of Virginia on Friday night. Carton also became the third Demon Deacon with double-digit singles wins in dual match play.

Virginia Tech tied the match with wins on courts five and six before Tannenbaum clinched the win for Wake Forest.

With the victory over the Hokies, the Deacs earned their first victory over a top-40 opponent this season, having come close against both No. 18 Tennessee and No. 24 Notre Dame earlier in the year.

The win also signified head coach Jeff Wyshner's 199th career victory at the helm of Wake Forest. Wyshner, who broke the all-time program record for most wins as a head coach earlier this season, will look to become the first Demon Deacon head coach to eclipse the 200-win mark in program history tomorrow as the Deacs take on No. 64 Charlotte in their final non-conference match of the season.

From Coach Wyshner
"Great performance today. That was our hardest fought doubles point of the season. Huge credit to Jingyi [Li] for stepping into the third doubles spot. She hit an amazing deuce point volley at 4-4 and then served it out to help get the win there. Singles was a battle. Nevena [Carton] and Anna [Zhang] were phenomenal. We battled on courts two, five, and six, and Kady [Tannenbaum] was amazing coming through in that last match as a freshman against a senior. Huge team win today." - head coach Jeff Wyshner
