Demon Deacons Set for Big Four Weekend Against Top-10 Foes

The Deacs face off against No. 4 North Carolina on Friday before matching up against No. 7 Duke on Sunday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After a week-long break, the No. 37 Wake Forest women's tennis team returns to action this upcoming weekend with a short trip down Tobacco Road to take on a pair of top-10 Big Four opponents in No. 4 North Carolina and No. 7 Duke.

The Demon Deacons start their weekend with a matchup against the Tar Heels on Friday, with first serve slated for 5 p.m. The match will be live streamed through UNC's website, while scores will be updated throughout the match here.

Wake Forest concludes its Big Four weekend on Sunday as they take on the Blue Devils at 2 p.m. All matches will be available for streaming via Playsight and live scores will be available here.

Last Time Out
Wake Forest opened their home ACC schedule against No. 2 Virginia (Mar. 7) and No. 37 Virginia Tech (Mar. 9), splitting the weekend against the Cavaliers and Hokies.

The Demon Deacons fell to Virginia in their ACC home opener, 4-1, with junior Nevena Carton picking up the only point for the Deacs, as she pulled off a top-25 upset against No. 22 Sara Ziodato (6-4, 6-4).

Carton continued her excellent weekend against Virginia Tech with another top-30 victory over No. 26 Ozlem Oslu (6-3, 6-2), ultimately earning her first career ACC Player of the Week honor. Carton also picked up a key doubles victory alongside freshman Kady Tannenbaum against No. 60 Cartledge/Uslu at second doubles (6-2).

The Deacs would secure their 15th doubles point of the season as graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Jingyi Li picked up a 6-4 win at third doubles.

After Zhang cruised to a straight-sets victory at third singles (6-1, 6-2), Tannenbaum closed out the 4-3 victory over the Hokies, earning the deciding point in a three-set thriller on court four, defeating Arina Gamretkaia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Doubles Dominance
Through the first 17 matches of dual match play, the Demon Deacons have been dominant in doubles action, as they hold a combined 30-7 record while securing the doubles point 15 times this season.

Zhang and junior Whitley Pate are currently undefeated at 11-0 this season, while Carton and Tannenbaum matched a team-best 11 doubles wins following their victory against Virginia Tech. Graduate student Makayla Mills and redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch close out the main doubles pairings for the Deacs, holding a 6-3 record at the first doubles slot.

Singles Success
The Demon Deacons have found success this season in singles play with a combined 59-26 record during the spring. Three Deacs have recorded double-digit wins thus far, with Carton and sophomore Sankavi Gownder leading the way with 10-3 records. Freshman Brianna Baldi also holds double-digit wins this season, as the Greensboro, N.C., native is 10-5 to start her collegiate career. Pate and Tannenbaum sit just behind the trio with nine singles victories this spring.

Blanch and Zhang round out the main starting lineup for the Deacs, as Blanch holds a 6-4 record and Zhang sits at 3-3 having won three of her last four. Finally, Li earned two wins this season at the sixth singles position during non-conference action.

Deacs in the ITA Rankings
The Demon Deacons are currently ranked No. 37 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, as announced on Tuesday. The Deacs hold a 12-5 record and are one of 11 Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked inside the top-50.

Wake Forest also features two doubles teams and two singles players in the latest ITA rankings. Following her impressive weekend against Virginia and Virginia Tech, Carton shot up to No. 53, while Blanch moved to No. 116. In doubles, Carton and Tannenbaum returned to the rankings at No. 64 as Blanch and Mills joined them at No. 86.

Closing In on Win No. 200
After becoming the all-time winningest head coach in women's tennis program history earlier this season, head coach Jeff Wyshner earned his 199th career victory against Virginia Tech.

Under Wyshner's leadership, the Demon Deacons have amassed a 199-184 overall record and have made eight-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Wyshner has also helped produce three All-Americans during his 15-year tenure, including Singles All-American Carolyn Campana (2021), and Doubles All-Americans MC Meredith and Eliza Omiru (2020) and Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth (2022).

Scouting the Opposition
North Carolina enters the weekend ranked No. 4 following the latest ITA poll. The Tar Heels currently sit at 13-3 as they are currently on a six-match winning streak, including wins over four ACC teams to open conference play. In their most recent matches, North Carolina defeated both Clemson and Georgia Tech on the road, defeating the Tigers, 4-2, before sweeping the Yellow Jackets.

The Tar Heels have four players ranked inside the top-50 in the latest polls, with junior Reese Brantmeier leading the way at No. 9. Joining Brantmeier in the top-15 is sophomore Theadora Rabman, who is ranked No. 15 in the country. Senior Carson Tanguilig and sophomore sophomore Tatum Evans round out the Tar Heels in the top-50 at No. 43 and No. 48 respectively.

North Carolina also has three doubles teams ranked, including two duos inside the top-20. Tanguilig and freshman Susanna Maltby lead the charge at No. 9, while Brantmeier and freshman Alanis Hamilton are ranked No. 20. Evans and Rabman are ranked inside the top-50, currently sitting at No. 46.

Duke comes into the weekend at No. 7 in the country, having started the season 11-2 overall and 4-0 in conference action. In their latest match, the Blue Devils defeated Yale 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon to extend their winning streak to seven matches.

Duke has five players ranked in the latest ITA update, including two inside the top-25. Freshman Irina Balus leads the Blue Devils at No. 12, having amassed a 7-2 record this season while playing primarily in the first and second singles slot. Senior Emma Jackson, who is ranked No. 25, is 7-3 this season. Joining Balus and Jackson in the rankings are sophomores Eleana Yu and Shavit Kimchi, who are ranked 41st and 66th respectively, and senior Ellie Coleman, who closes out the rankings at No. 125.

The Blue Devils have only one team ranked in the latest doubles poll, with Balus and Coleman ranked at No. 13. The duo holds a 17-6 record this season, including an 8-4 start to dual match action.
 
Up Next
The Demon Deacons return home to Leighton Courts next weekend, as they welcome Georgia Tech and Clemson. The Deacs take on the Yellow Jackets on Friday (March 28) at 4 p.m. before turning their attention to the Tigers on Sunday at noon.
