The Demon Deacons didn’t allow a hit after the second batter of the game

SHELBY, N.C. – Behind a solid start from sophomore pitcher Matthew Dallas, the Wake Forest baseball team picked up its 30th victory of the season with a 3-2 win over App State on Tuesday night at Keeter Stadium.

Dallas allowed just one hit — a solo home run to the second batter of the game — before dominating over 5.2 innings of work. The outing marked his longest of the season, as the lefty retired 12 straight hitters from the last batter in the top of the second to the first two batters of the sixth.

Over his last two starts, Dallas has allowed just two earned runs over 10.2 innings on the mound. Since moving to the midweek role, the Memphis, Tenn., native has thrived with just five earned runs over 19.0 innings for a 2.37 ERA with 25 strikeouts in four starts.

Relievers Griffin Green, Luke Schmolke and Haiden Leffew allowed no hits and just two baserunners between them over the final 3.1 innings.

At the plate, junior Jack Winnay drove in multiple runs for the 15th time this season, lifting a pair of sacrifice flies. The Newton, Mass., native has driven in two or more runs in three of the last four contests for the Demon Deacons.

Right fielder Matt Scannell recorded a pair of hits for the fourth straight game, roping a two-out RBI double to the wall in right to put Wake Forest on the board in the second.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • App State grabbed a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the first.
  • Starter Matthew Dallas settled in with a scoreless second inning of work.
  • Designated hitter Luke Costello collected the first hit for Wake Forest in the bottom of the second, and came home to tie the game at 1-1 on a two-out double down the line in right from graduate transfer Matt Scannell
  • Dallas collected a pair of strikeouts in a three-up, three-down top of the third.
  • Three straight free-90s loaded the bases for Wake Forest with one out, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Jack Winnay gave the Deacs a 2-1 lead after three.
  • Needing just 12 pitches, Dallas retired the Mountainers in order again in the fourth.
  • Dallas retired his 10th-straight batter in a 10-pitch top of the fifth.
  • The Mountaineers got a run back in the sixth to trim the Wake Forest lead to 3-2.
  • Reliever Griffin Green worked a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the Demon Deacons' lead.
  • Junior Luke Schmolke sat the Mountaineers down in order in the eighth.
  • Sophomore Haiden Leffew picked up his third save of the year to seal the 3-2 win.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
STAGGERING STATISTIC
  • Wake Forest reaches the 30-win mark for the fourth-straight season, the longest such streak since the Deacs won 30 or more in six-straight seasons from 1997-2002.

FROM COACH WALTER
"Matt Dallas was obviously the story today. He threw the ball really well, maybe got a little tired there in the sixth. He had a chance to get another shutdown inning. His first two shutdowns were awesome. He got an 0-2 count on that third hitter [in the sixth] and ended up walking him and tried to do a little too much and then the next two guys get on, so we went to Griff [Green]. But really happy with Matt Dallas and our bullpen. Griffin was really good, four big outs from him. Three big outs from [Luke Schmolke] and then obviously Haiden Leffew in the ninth was spectacular." - Head Coach Tom Walter
