Wake Forest Routs No. 4 Florida State for Road Series Win

4/6/2025 5:25:00 PM | Baseball

Six different Demon Deacons finished with multiple hits as Wake Forest scored 17 runs to secure the series.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With a conference series on the line, the Wake Forest baseball team dominated No. 4 Florida State,17-2, in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

Trailing 2-0 after two innings, the Demon Deacon (23-10, 9-6 ACC) offense exploded for 11 combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Offensively, the Demon Deacons' 17 runs were the second-most in ACC play this season and was the largest margin of victory over a conference opponent to date. Six different Wake Forest players logged two or more hits, led by Cam Nelson's three-hit, four-RBI performance from the plate.

Blake Morningstar moved his record to 4-0 on the season, as he went five strong innings, allowing just three runs with eight strikeouts. The bullpen shut down the Seminoles (25-6, 8-4 ACC) over the final three innings as Wake Forest moved its conference record to 9-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wake Forest drew a pair of two-out walks but were unable to convert in the top of the first.
  • The Seminoles took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half.
  • Florida State extended its lead to 2-0 through two innings.
  • The Deacs left a runner stranded at third base in the top of the third.
  • Starter Blake Morningstar worked back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Seminoles scoreless.
  • The Demon Deacons struck for four runs in the top of the third to grab the lead.
    • First baseman Jack Winnay roped a double to right center on the first pitch of the fourth to get the Deacs offense moving.
    • Wake Forest tied things up as second baseman Dalton Wentz homered on a full count for his third home run of the series.
    • With a runner on base and two outs in the inning, center fielder Cam Nelson launched his first career home run to give Wake Forest a 4-2 advantage.
  • Another pair of punchouts from Morningstar maintained the Deacs' 4-2 lead over Florida State headed into the fifth inning.
  • The Wake Forest offense exploded with seven runs in the top of the fifth.
    • Shortstop Marek Houston doubled down the line in left to begin the inning.
    • Singles from third baseman Kade Lewis and designated hitter Luke Costello added two more runs to the Deacs' total.
    • Nelson lasered a two-out, two-RBI single to keep the momentum going.
    • An error on the Seminoles allowed catcher Jimmy Keenan to score.
    • Lewis added his second hit of the frame with another two-RBI single to close out the scoring.
  • Morningstar struck out the side to cap off an electric inning for the Demon Deacons.
  • Sophomore Josh Gunther recorded two punchouts in his inning of work to keep the Seminoles scoreless in the sixth inning.
  • Relievers Haiden Leffew and Nate Whysong combined to record a scoreless frame in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Wake Forest tagged on six more runs in the top of the eighth.
    • Singles from Lewis, Winnay, and Wentz loaded the bases with no outs.
    • Winnay and Lewis scored on a two-RBI single through the left side from Costello.
    • Left fielder Javar Williams tabbed his first hit of the contest to put the Deacons up 15-2.
    • After catcher Jacob Burley reached base on an error, Nelson doubled to center to put two in scoring position for right fielder Matt Scannell.
    • Scannell singled through the right side to extend Wake Forest's lead to 17-2.
  • Reliever Griffin Greene kept the Seminoles hitless during his frame of work.
  • Wake Forest claimed the series victory in eight innings, defeating No. 4 Florida State 17-2.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
  • Sophomore Cam Nelson went 3-for-4 at the plate, finishing a triple away from the cycle.
    • The homer in the fourth marked his first career home run.
  • Freshman Luke Costello plated a career-high three RBI and continued his seven-game hitting streak.
    • Costello finished the weekend series 5-for-14 (.357) at the plate against the Noles.
  • Freshman Dalton Wentz launched a homer in each game of the series, joining former Deac Nick Kurtz as the last Demon Deacon to hit a home run in all three games of an ACC series.

STAGGERING STATISTIC
  • Wake Forest held Florida State to just seven runs on the weekend.
    • Through the first three weekends of ACC play for Florida State, the Seminole offense had scored at least 28 runs across their weekend series.

FROM COACH WALTER
"Blake Morningstar set the tone for us. He just kept battling and kept battling until we got a chance to break through and I was just so proud of Blake. He didn't have his best stuff. He walked more than he normally walks, he hit a couple of guys and you don't see him do that. He just kept coming and kept making pitches when we needed him to and that was huge.

The offense got rolling there with [Dalton Wentz] and [Jack Winnay] in the fourth inning to get us on the board and then [Cam Nelson] obviously had a huge day. Offensively, up and down the lineup today, we were really good all day today. I'm proud of this club. I told the guys afterwards that we got a little glimpse of how good we can be. That first game we had four or five situational at-bats, and if we cash in, we probably find a way to win on Friday. We got a glimpse of how good we can be, and I'm proud of our club." - Head Coach Tom Walter
