Hawke and Conte Power Wake Forest to Midweek Win Over UNCG

4/8/2025 9:57:00 PM | Baseball

The duo both launched two-run homers for their second of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest baseball picked up its third-straight win with a 6-3 victory over UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Starter Matthew Dallas reached double-digit strikeouts for the first time in his career, punching out 11 Spartans (14-18, 4-2 SoCon) over 4.2 innings. The lefty allowed just one run on one hit in the contest, retiring 13-straight after a leadoff walk to open the game.

Freshman Troy Dressler picked up the first win of his Wake Forest (24-10, 9-6 ACC) career, tossing a hitless inning of relief with a strikeout.

Leading the nation in strikeouts entering the contest, the Demon Deacons totaled 16 punchouts against UNCG to run their total to 403 on the year.

For the fourth-straight contest, Wake Forest left the yard multiple times, as junior Austin Hawke and freshman Matt Conte launched a pair of two-run home runs for their second of the year.

Seven different Demon Deacon hitters recorded a hit in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starter Matthew Dallas worked a scoreless top of the first with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Needing just 10 pitches, Dallas picked up two more strikeouts in the top of the second.
  • Freshman Dalton Wentz collected Wake's first hit with a single to left in the bottom half but the Deacs couldn't bring him around.
  • Dallas struck out the side to run his total to seven through three innings.
  • An RBI fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Luke Costello broke the tie and gave Wake Forest a 1-0 advantage after four innings of play.
  • UNCG got the run back in the top of the fifth.
  • Freshman Troy Dressler got Wake Forest out of a jam in the sixth with a flyout and groundout.
  • Wake grabbed the lead right back with a two-run home run off the bat of shortstop Austin Hawke.
    • The homer marked the second of the year for the junior, giving the Demon Deacons a 3-1 advantage.
  • Dressler and lefty Joe Ariola combined to keep the Spartans off the board in the seventh.
  • The Demon Deacons padded their lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
    • After a leadoff walk from sophomore Javar Williams, Conte launched his second home run of the season to right field.
    • Nelson later extended the lead as he scored on a passed ball.
  • In the top of the eighth, Bowie logged a scoreless inning of work and moved the Deacs to just three outs away from their third-consecutive victory.
  • The Spartans added two runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Green closed the door and secured the 6-3 win.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
  • Making his first midweek start, sophomore Matthew Dallas was electric over 4.2 innings, striking out a career-high 11 batters.
    • The lefty struck out six-straight batters between the second and fourth innings.
    • Dallas retired 14 of the 17 Spartan hitters he faced, including 13-straight after issuing a leadoff walk to open the game.

STAGGERING STATISTIC
  • With the 16 strikeouts, Wake Forest became the first pitching staff to reach 400 strikeouts this season.
    • Averaging nearly 12 strikeouts per game, 47.1% (403 of 856) of the Demon Deacons' outs recorded have come via the K.
    • Wake Forest has struck out 112 batters over the last 10 games.
    • Since the start of the 2023 season, Wake Forest has 1,872 strikeouts, good for 284 more than any other ACC competitor. Nationally, the Demon Deacons rank second over this time span, trailing only LSU.

FROM COACH WALTER
"It wasn't a pretty win, and we didn't play great. I thought we might be flat today and we were. Matt Dallas was really good and I was really happy with the way he threw the ball. I was happy with the way Troy Dressler threw the ball coming in behind him and getting us out of that inning. Austin Hawke off the bench with the big home run. Matt Conte had a home run to give us some space. We got some hits when we needed to, but we are certainly going to need to play a whole lot better on Thursday if we want to beat North Carolina. We need to have a good practice tomorrow and be ready to go Thursday." - Head Coach Tom Walter

UP NEXT
