Matt Scannell powered the Deacs with a 3-for-3 day and three runs scored.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the final home game of the 2025 regular season, the Wake Forest baseball team took the rubber match against Pitt, 6-3, at David F. Couch Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
The bottom third of the order provided the spark for Wake Forest (34-17, 14-13 ACC) in the series finale, as Matt Scannell, Jimmy Keenan and Javar Williams combined to go 7-for-10 (.700) with four runs scored and an RBI between them.
Scannell finished 3-for-3 with a trio of singles and runs scored. The Stone Oaks, Texas native is now 16-for-36 (.444) over the last nine games.
Keenan added a pair of hits for his fourth two-hit effort of the season, including an RBI single to tie the game in the sixth. Williams put together his seventh multi-hit game of his sophomore season.
Starter Chris Levonas went 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits. The freshman struck out five Panthers (26-23, 10-17 ACC) hitters, allowing one run or less for the sixth time in 10 appearances.
Junior Zach Johnston worked 1.2 hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts to preserve the Wake lead late in the contest.
Sophomore Josh Gunther retired all four batters he faced, including two strikeouts, as he secured his fifth save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
"Great series win. We really needed that. I'm really proud of Chris Levonis, had a good start for us, gave us a chance. Zach Johnson and Josh Gunther threw the ball great down the stretch, got us nine huge outs. We didn't cash in on some of our early opportunities, left the bases loaded a couple times, but we kept grinding and found a way to score six runs. The bottom of our order today really got it done. Matt Scandal in the seven hole, Jimmy Keenan eight and Javar Williams, nine. Those three guys were really the difference for us today. I thought we made some great plays in the outfield. Scanny had a diving catch and threw a guy out at the plate. Javar saves a home run. Luke Costello with a diving catch. Kade [Lewis] with the line drive down the line, really happy with our defense today, too. Good all-around team win. We needed it." - Head Coach Tom Walter
