Demon Deacons Advance to National Championship with 4-2 Victory Over Stanford
5/17/2025 11:07:00 PM | Men's Tennis
This marks Wake Forest’s third national championship appearance and first since 2019.
WACO, Texas – After being moved indoors due to weather, the top-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA national championship match following its 4-2 win against No. 4-seeded Stanford Saturday evening inside the Hawkins Tennis Center.
The Demon Deacons (39-1) are now the first team to reach three national championships since 2018 with only Texas having a chance to join them depending on the result against TCU. Wake Forest will also look to be just the second team to win two NCAA Championships during that span (Virginia).
The Deacs also extended its program record for most wins in a single campaign and will have a chance to reach the all-time ACC record with a win in the national championship match.
A win over the fifth-ranked Cardinal (ITA Poll) marked the 23nd ranked victory for the Demon Deacons and ninth over a top-10 opponent, both having already set program records. Of note, this was the second win over Stanford this season for Wake Forest, following the team's 4-2 home win in the ACC opener on Feb. 28.
The Deacs will now await the winner of No. 2-seeded TCU and No. 3-seeded Texas. The championship match is slated for 8 p.m. eastern time and will once again be streamed on ESPN+ with live results available via IOnCourt.
The Demon Deacons will look to claim the program's second-ever NCAA title Sunday, Wake Forest's 11th overall and the first since women's golf in 2023. Additionally, they will try to become the second Wake Forest team to win multiple national championships joining men's golf and field hockey, both with three.
Wake Forest opened Saturday's match by claiming its 37th doubles point in 40 matches with wins on courts two and three. The stellar mark is believed to be an NCAA record for doubles points won in a single season.
Bouncing back from their first loss as a pair yesterday, graduate student Stefan Dostanic and freshman Charlie Robertson bounced back with a 6-3 victory over No. 47 Kang/von der Schulenburg on court two. The two newcomers are now 7-1 as a team and a combined 34-5 in doubles this season overall. Of note, Robertson is 11-1 overall in doubles against ranked opponents while Dostanic improved to 11-2.
On court three, the dynamic duo of sophomore Luca Pow and senior Luciano Tacchi defeated No. 48 Banerjee/Razeghi, 6-4, and clinched the opening point for the second-consecutive match. The All-Americans are now 17-4 as a team this spring and entered the tournament ranked as the No. 18-ranked duo. Over the last two years, they are 37-10 in match play.
The Deacs then carried the momentum over to singles where they claimed courts two, five and six to book their ticket to the championship.
On court five, Tacchi earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Nico Godsick and put the Demon Deacons up 2-0. The win moved the Argentine to 15-8 on the season and brought his career singles wins total to 63, the most out of any active player in a Wake Forest uniform in match play. Tacchi has only dropped two matches in his last 17 outings dating back to March 7.
Becoming the first Demon Deacon to reach 30 wins in a single season since Petros Chrysochos in 2018, Pow picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alex Razeghi on court six. He now holds an incredible 57-5 record over his two-year career with the Demon Deacons and is 4-0 in the NCAA tournament.
With the score at 3-2 and the final two matches coming down to the wire, junior DK Suresh Ekambaram officially booked Wake Forest's ticket to the national championship as he defeated Kyle Kang, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, in second singles. The win marked his 19th of the spring to just eight losses while competing on the first two lines. Additionally, Suresh improved to 4-1 in the NCAA tournament.
His 19 wins rank second on the team. A win in the championship match tomorrow would see him become the second Demon Deacon this season to reach 20 singles wins and 20 doubles wins, joining Pow.
While his match went unfinished, Dostanic came within a game away from defeating a top-10 opponent for the second-consecutive day as the match concluded with him holding a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 5-4 lead over No. 7 Samir Banerjee.
Saturday's results moved Wake Forest to an unprecedented 78-22 combined record in doubles and 133-38 in singles.

From Coach Bresky
"We've talked about dealing with adversity, having to wait around and move indoors. We've worked really hard on our fitness and I knew we were ready to go. The switch indoors kind of takes a little of that out and changes a bunch of the matchups, but I think we handled it really well. We played a very good doubles point, so it's nice to get that on the board. We split the first sets, so we were rolling along in a few of those. Credit to Stanford, they've had a great year and they're a great team. They didn't go away and made it tough there. Dostanic coming back to win that second set was huge. We're obviously excited to get the win. I feel like we've had our backs against the wall all year and we just keep pushing on. We're excited to go play for a national title tomorrow."
