
Wake Forest Downs Gardner-Webb, Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

The Demon Deacons will battle Kentucky on Saturday at 5 p.m. for a chance to advance to the Super Regionals.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C – Kicking off its 12th-consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, the top-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team has advanced to the second round as it defeated Gardner-Webb, 4-1, Friday evening at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
With the win, the Demon Deacons (35-1) have now broken the program record for most wins in a single season, surpassing the 2019 team. They will return to the courts tomorrow (May 3) at 5 p.m. to take on Kentucky for a spot in the Super Regionals next weekend.
Of note, under the direction of 2025 ACC Coach of the Year Tony Bresky, Wake Forest has advanced past the first round of the tournament in each of the last 11 editions.
Playing together for the fourth time, graduate student Stefan Dostanic and freshman Charlie Robertson downed Cressoni/Lemieux-Monette, 6-2, on court two. The two newcomers are perfect (4-0) as a pair and a combined 28-3 in doubles overall this season.
On court three, the veteran duo of graduate student Ioannis Xilas and senior Luciano Tacchi clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Van Wijk/Lepine. The Deacs have now taken 34 of a possible 36 doubles points so far this season.
Following up on his doubles win, Dostanic earned a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory in singles on court one over Eduardo Dias. The No. 13-ranked singles player in the nation is now 10-3 overall in a Wake Forest uniform.
Bouncing back from just his third singles loss of the season, sophomore Luca Pow picked up a quick 6-3, 6-1 win over Boyd Schreiber on court six. Pow leads the team with 27 singles wins this season and holds an incredible 53-5 mark over his two-year career with the Demon Deacons.
With his 6-2, 6-4 win over Kim Niethammer in second singles, junior DK Suresh Ekambaram notched his 16th win of the spring and clinched the first round victory for Wake Forest. Suresh ranks third on the team in wins only behind Pow (27) and Xilas (17).
The Demon Deacons are now 122-37 in singles this campaign and 70-17 in doubles.

The Wildcats come into Saturday with a 17-11 record and are making their ninth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, including back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals. On Friday, Kentucky handled Old Dominion with a 4-0 victory in the opening round. They are led by No. 50-ranked Antoine Ghibaudo in the first singles position. Of note, Wake Forest holds a 5-3 record over Kentucky dating back to the first meeting in 2006.

The winner of the Winston-Salem Regional will advance to the Super Regional to be held the following weekend at eight different sites. If Wake Forest wins the Winston-Salem Regional, it will host a Super Regional at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex May 9.
