No. 10 Wake Forest to Face LSU in ACC/SEC Clash

This is the squad’s first meeting since 2010 and just the second time on home turf.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- After a 2-0 victory in the 2025 home opener this past Thursday, the No. 10 ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team will close its opening weekend slate on Sunday, Aug. 17 at Spry Stadium against the LSU Tigers. 

The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACCN with live stats available here.

2025 Wake Forest soccer season and single game tickets are on-sale now giving fans the opportunity to witness The Best Fan Experience In North Carolina from a number of unique seating options!

Adult season tickets start as low as $70 for general admission and $50 for youth while reserved chairbacks are $130 for fans and $110 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff. 

Fans can catch all of Demon Deacon home action this fall as well by purchasing combo season tickets to see both men's and women's soccer starting as low as $90 for general admission and $180 for reserved chairbacks for fans and $150 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff.

Last Time Out
  • Wake Forest began their 2025 campaign on the front foot, with a 2-0 victory over the SMU Mustangs Thursday evening at Spry Stadium. 
  • SMU recorded the first shot of the contest, but goalkeeper Valentina Amaral remained unbothered.
    • The Oviedo, Fla.-native was recently named to the United Soccer Coaches Association Preseason Goalkeepers to Watchlist following a stellar 2024 season.
  • In her Demon Deacon debut, freshman Kylie Maxwell recorded her first career goal to give the Deacs the 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. 
    • Also in her debut for the Black and Gold was freshman Alejandra Gomez, who notched her first career points with an assist on Maxwell's goal.
    • Redshirt-sophomore Sierra Sythe recorded the final assist on the goal, the fifth of her career. 
  • Wake Forest maintained 54 percent of possession in the first 45 minutes. 
  • The Mustangs tested Amaral during the 51st minute, but a diving stop from the veteran kept the Deacs off the board. 
  • Wake Forest extended their lead in the 59th minute off a deflected ball. 
  • The Deacs continued to push forward for a third goal, with a pair of attempts inside the 18 in the 63rd minute including a shot that was pushed away by the SMU keeper.  
  • Wake Forest would see through the clean sheet result, as 17 players contributed to the 2-0 victory.
    • With Thursday's result, Amaral recorded her eighth career shutout. 
Quick Hitters
  • The Demon Deacons currently rank 10th on the United Soccer Coaches Poll and 18th on TopDrawerSoccer. 
  • Wake Forest wrapped the 2024 year with a 16-4-1 record, highlighted by a 9-1-1 home record at Spry Stadium. 
    • Since the 2021 season, the Deacs are 15-0-2 at home against non-conference opponents in the regular season.
  • Three freshman made their collegiate debuts during Thursday's contests, while returners Laine DeNatale, Chloe Burst, and Amaya Dawkins made their first career starts. 

Eyes on the Tigers
  • LSU concluded the past year with a 9-9-3 overall record including a 5-5-1 record on the road.
  • The 2025 squad features 18 returners and 10 newcomers, including two graduate transfers.
  • The Tigers opened the new season with a 2-0 victory over South Alabama, with goals from returners Ida Hermannsdottir and Ava Galligan, both of whom were key contributors last season. 
    • A senior from Reykjavik, Iceland, Hermannsdottir started 19 of her 21 appearances as a junior, recording eight goals and 16 points for the Tigers and leading the team in both categories. 
    • Galligan followed closely behind, with five goals in 20 games played, 12 of which she started.
  • Other notable returners include senior Sydney Cheesman, who started 20 of 20 matches and played the full 90 in 15 of said matches. Cheesman led the team in assists with 4 and logged a team-high 1,165 minutes on the pitch.
  • In goal for the Tigers against South Alabama was senior Sophine Kevorkian, who appeared in four total matches for LSU during her junior year.
    • Kevorkian recorded 16 saves this past season and posted back-to-back shutouts, a performance that helped LSU clinch a spot in the 2024 SEC Tournament. 
  • Junior Audur Scheving saw the most action in net for the Tigers this past season, playing 17 total matches. The Reykjavik, Iceland native wrapped the season with a 1.76 goals against average, tallying 58 saves and three clean sheets. 

Series History vs. LSU
  •  The Demon Deacons are 2-0-0 in their time against the Tigers, with their most recent meeting in 2010. Wake Forest took the 3-1 victory at Spry Stadium, which featured a squad of notable Demon Deacon alumnae: Katie Stengel and Aubrey Bledsoe. 
  • Wake Forest first clashed with LSU in 1998, where the Deacs took a dominant 5-0 victory. 
    • During that same match, Anne Shropshire ('99) scored the program record for fastest second-half goal, just 13 seconds into the half.
