Averill Earns 450th Career Win as Wake Wins Fourth Straight

9/14/2025 3:04:00 PM | Field Hockey

Over the four-game streak, the Demon Deacons are outshooting opponents 124 to 20.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A five-goal first quarter set the tone as Wake Forest field hockey rolled to a dominant 9-1 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

Head Coach Jen Averill picked up her 450th career win to add to a lengthy list of accomplishments as the leader of the Demon Deacons.

The Demon Deacons (5-2) saw eight different players contribute to the scoring sheet, highlighted by a hat trick from forward Lauren Storey, while Mia Montag and Mia Schoenbeck each scored twice.

Freshman Logan Marthinus and sophomore Sarah Mudd also found the cage, with Ava Moore and Faye Janse chipping in assists.

Wake Forest outshot the River Hawks (2-4) by a 39-8 margin, including a 23-5 edge in shots on target, and posted a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners. Goalkeepers Ellie Todd and Caroline Grebe combined for the win, with Todd making four saves in 45 minutes of action.

How It Happened
  • Storey opened the scoring less than three minutes in, finishing a feed from Janse to make it 1-0.
  • Mudd doubled the advantage in the ninth minute off an assist from Moore for her second career goal.
  • Storey struck again in the 13th minute, this time set up by Montag, before Montag tallied one of her own at 14:04.
  • With just one second left in the quarter, Schoenbeck added her sixth goal of the season, capping a five-goal opening frame.
  • Marthinus made it 6-0 just 60 seconds into the period with her second goal of the year.
  • UMass Lowell broke through in the 22nd minute, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
  • The Deacs restored momentum before halftime as Montag notched her second goal of the day in the 29th minute, giving Wake a 7-1 lead at the break.
  • Wake Forest continued to control possession, firing 11 more shots in the frame.
  • Todd added a pair of stops on the defensive end, and the score held at 7-1 through 45 minutes.
  • Storey completed her hat trick in the 49th minute, pushing the lead to 8-1.
  • Schoenbeck converted a penalty stroke in the 58th minute for her seventh goal of the season, sealing the 9-1 final.

Quotables
"What a first quarter. The challenge for the squad was how to continue to grow our connections with one another. How do we disperse breaking lines through the right, middle and left? The flow of the game really accentuated our strengths, and then really allowed us the opportunity to have different looks with Head Coach Jen Averill
