No. 4 Wake Forest Set For Non-Conference Clash Against UNCW

The Demon Deacons will look to extend its 17-match home unbeaten streak Tuesday night.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After opening ACC play with a draw at North Carolina on Friday, No. 4 Wake Forest returns to non-conference action Tuesday evening against UNCW at Spry Stadium.

The match against the Seahawks is slated for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra with live stats available here.

Quick Notes
  • Wake Forest has only conceded two goals this campaign, which is tied for the fewest goals allowed through six games in the Muuss-era.
    • Goalkeeper Jonah Mednard has conceded just twice in his career with 540 total minutes in goal with three solo clean sheets. He holds a .882 save percentage and a .34 goals-against average.
  • Since 2015, Muuss has led the Deacs to a stellar 94-16-9 record against non-conference opponents including a 4-0-1 mark this season.
    • Additionally, Wake Forest is 108-17-10 during that time against unranked opposition.
  • Wake Forest will look to start unbeaten through seven matches for the third time under Muuss, with the previous instances coming in 2018 (11) and 2022 (9).
  • The Demon Deacons enter the contest unbeaten in their last 17 matches at Spry Stadium with wins in nine of the last 10.
    • The Deacs hold a 13-0-4 home record dating back to Aug. 25 of last year.
    • Additionally, the Demon Deacons have yet to trail this season and have led for 275 minutes.
  • Eight separate Demon Deacons have contributed to 10 goals scored so far this season, with Tate Lorentz and Jose Perez leading the squad with two apiece.
    • Of note, eight Deacs have tallied an assist already in 2025.
  • The Demon Deacons currently hold the No. 4 spot in the United Soccer Coaches' preseason poll while also landing at No. 1 and No. 5 in the TopDrawerSoccer and College Soccer News polls, respectively.
  • Wake Forest was picked to finish second in the ACC preseason poll and held the most first-place votes (5).

Series History
  • This will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the two sides, with Wake Forest holding a 6-2-1 record over UNCW dating back to the first clash on Oct. 18, 1980.
    • The Deacs last lost to the Seahawks in 1983 with a 4-0-1 record since.
    • Wake Forest has out-scored UNCW, 19-to-6, over the 10 meetings.
  • Tuesday will also be the first time the two programs have met at Spry Stadium since Wake Forest's 2-1 NCAA Tournament win on Nov. 11, 2009.
    • Overall, Wake Forest is 3-1-0 against UNCW in Winston-Salem.
  • The last meeting took place on Oct. 15 of last year, in which the Deacs came back on the road after conceding in the 10th minute to win 4-1.

Scouting the Seahawks
  • UNCW enters the match on the back of its first win of the season against William & Mary on Saturday, where the Seahawks earned a dominant 5-0 victory at home.
    • The Seahawks are now 1-2-1 on the year with a 1-1-0 mark in CAA play.
    • Saturday also marked the second clean sheet of the season for UNCW following its 0-0 draw on the road at Georgia Southern.
  • All seven goals for UNCW this season have been scored by different players,
  • Senior midfielder Jack Clarkson leads the team with five points on a goal and three assists.
    • Clarkson recorded four of those five points last time out against William & Mary.
    • He led the team with six assists in 2024 and now has 11 for his career.
  • Last year the Seahawks posted a 6-9-5 record and went .500 (4-4) in conference play before making a run to the CAA Championship match and losing to No. 4-seeded Hofstra, 1-0.
  • The Seahawks were picked to finish second in the CAA south poll, tied with Charleston and behind Elon.
    • UNCW also landed two members on the All-ACC Preseason Team in midfielder Osei Gyamfi and defender Jake Shannon.
    • Ethan Newsome, Cesare D'Amico, Gavin Carmichael and Trey Smiley earned Honorable Mention honors.
  • Smiley, a redshirt-sophomore keeper, has been a solid piece in goal so far this campaign with a 1.03 goals-against average and 14 saves to just four goals allowed.
    • He started 10 games in goal last year and contributed to four clean sheets and four wins.

Last Time Out (at North Carolina)
  • In the first ACC contest and first road match of the 2025 campaign, the No. 4 Wake Forest men's soccer team (4-0-2, 0-0-1 ACC) earned a point in a 1-1 draw against No. 21 North Carolina (3-1-2, 0-0-2 ACC) on Friday evening. 
  • The Demon Deacons got on the board in the 22nd minute, as junior midfielder Jose Perez rocketed his second outside-the-box goal of the season from around 30-yards out on an assist from junior Jeffrey White. However, North Carolina increased the pressure in the second half and netted the eventual equalizer in the 67th minute off a corner kick. 
  • Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jonah Mednard recorded a career-high-tying six saves over the 90 minutes in addition to cutting out a few dangerous crosses. Before the Tar Heel goal, the Deacs went 523 minutes without conceding.
  • So far this season, Mednard has posted a 0.34 goals-against average and a .882 save percentage with just two goals allowed.
  • Wake Forest has started unbeaten through six matches for the third time under Muuss, with the previous two instances coming in 2018 and 2022.
  • The Demon Deacons are now 7-2-2 in conference openers under head coach Bobby Muuss and 4-2-2 when opening on the road. Additionally, after facing the No. 21-ranked Tar Heels, the Demon Deacons are now 48-23-16 against ranked foes in the Muuss era. 

Battle Tested
  • The Demon Deacons face one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season due to the strength of the ACC.
  • Wake Forest has six opponents on the schedule that are currently ranked inside the top 20, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 Clemson and No. 10 Pitt.
  • Of note, the ACC holds six spots in the top 10 of the United Soccer Coaches poll and seven in the top 15.

National Leader In Wins 
  • Named the fourth head coach in program history prior to the start of the 2015 season, Bobby Muuss' Demon Deacon squads have built on the longstanding and rich 45-year history of the program. 
  • Since 2015, Wake Forest's 156 total wins ranks No. 1 nationally, five more than any program and 12 more than any other ACC program. During that span, Wake Forest is also joined only by Indiana as the only Division I programs to have won at least 10 matches every season. 
  • Additionally, Wake Forest and Indiana are the only two programs of the 211 programs nationally to hold double-digit NCAA Tournament appearance streaks.
  • Wake Forest also leads the nation in wins over the last quarter-century (361).

Consistent Threat In The Toughest Conference In The Country 
  • Recognized annually as the toughest soccer conference in the country from top to bottom, the ACC has placed the most teams in the NCAA Tournament each of the last 12 seasons and has had at least five teams earn a bid 24-straight seasons.
  • During the 2024 NCAA Tournament, the ACC earned nine bids including seven national seeds. 
  • Wake Forest has received an NCAA Tournament bid 14-straight seasons, eight years more than any other ACC program.

Looking Ahead
  • After Tuesday night's match, Wake Forest will return to ACC play as it takes on Virginia in Charlottesville on Friday, Sept. 19.
