No. 20 Wake Forest Earns Sixth-Straight Win with Victory over No. 13 Boston College

9/21/2025 2:40:00 PM | Field Hockey

Over the six-game win streak, the Demon Deacons are outshooting opponents 150 to 39.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team remained unbeaten in conference play, using a pair of first-quarter goals and a standout defensive performance to defeat No. 13 Boston College, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

The victory marked Wake Forest's (6-2, 2-0 ACC) second straight ACC win to start the season, marking the first time since 2017 that the Demon Deacons have opened conference play at 2-0.

Behind strikes from Sarah Mudd and Lauren Storey, the Demon Deacons jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back.

Wake Forest leaned on a resilient backline anchored by goalkeeper Ellie Todd, who finished with a season-high eight saves on nine shots on target from Boston College (3-4, 0-2 ACC). For Todd, it marked a season-high in saves, as the senior moved to 5-0 in the cage this season.

How It Happened
  • Storey ripped a shot on goal six minutes into the game, but a kick save from the Boston College keeper kept things scoreless.
  • B.C. earned the first corner of the match with 6:58 remaining, with nothing coming from the set piece.
  • Wake Forest struck quickly as Mudd pushed home the opener at 9:30 for her second goal of the season.
  • The Deacs took advantage of its first penalty corner of the game, as Lauren Storey put away her ninth goal of the year to double the lead in the 13th minute.
  • Senior Ellie Todd collected her second save of the quarter to keep B.C. scoreless through 15 minutes of play.
  • The Demon Deacons controlled possession for much of the second quarter, holding on to the two-goal advantage.
  • Boston College responded with a goal right before halftime to cut the Wake Forest lead in half at the break.
  • Wake forced the Eagles' goalie into action early in the third quarter, but a pair of saves kept the Demon Deacons' lead at 2-1.
  • Todd's fifth save of the match with just over a minute left in the third quarter kept Wake's lead at one.
  • Boston College increased the pressure in the final 15, piling up set-piece opportunities and forcing three more saves from Todd, but Wake's defense held strong.
  • The Deacs countered with a couple of late chances with shots from Faye Janse and Lena Keller
  • Wake closed out the 2-1 victory for its sixth-straight win.
Quotables
"
We are electric when we move the ball. When we have our structure and we move the ball, as most teams, we're dynamite. We got ourselves into a dribbling fest, that's when we get into trouble, when we stay in one lane for too long. Kudos to BC. We knew what we were going to get. They were going to run hard at us, and they did. We can make some adjustments, not too many, but enough to make sure that in our counterstructure, we're protecting against that. Just unbelievable fight for us to keep the lead, I thought our defensive penalty corner unit played phenomenal, and now we just got to limit our opponent's opportunity for their attack penalty corners." – Head Coach Jen Averill
