The Wake Forest field hockey team extends its winning streak to seven games with the last three all coming over ranked opponents in No. 2 North Carolina, No. 4 Syracuse and No. 13 Boston College.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 13 Wake Forest field hockey team remained unbeaten in conference play and at home, coming from a goal down with just over a minute left in regulation before knocking off No. 2 North Carolina, 2-1, in double overtime.
The victory marked Wake Forest's (7-2, 3-0 ACC) third-straight ACC win to start the season and also was the Deacs third consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
In the last three games, the Demon Deacons have defeated No. 2 North Carolina (8-1, 2-1 ACC), No. 4 Syracuse and No. 13 Boston College. Additionally, this marks the first time since the 2015 season that the Demon Deacons have opened conference play at 3-0 or better.
Trailing 1-0 with nearly a minute to play, the Deacs drew a yellow card and were also awarded a penalty corner, their sixth of the game. Mia Montag found Lauren Storey, who ripped a shot past the Tar Heel goalie, tying the game with 1:17 left in regulation.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Wake Forest again earned a yellow card on North Carolina, setting up a penalty corner, the Demon Deacons ninth of the game. Montag inserted to Storey, who set up Mia Schoenbeck for the game winner.
The winner marked Schoenbeck's ninth of the season and was her fourth in the last four games.
How It Happened
"What an awesome opportunity to be a part of tonight's game. I loved the resilience from our squad. I loved the back and forth. It was a classic, old-school, Wake-Carolina matchup. They created opportunities. We created opportunities. I thought Ellie Todd was sensational. I thought our defensive penalty corner was sensational. The fight to come back just shows a lot of the grit that our squad has. I'm super proud of every player." – Head Coach Jen Averill
