No. 7 Wake Forest Takes Down Fourth-Straight Ranked Opponent with 2-0 Victory at No. 18 Louisville

10/3/2025 8:23:00 PM | Field Hockey

The Demon Deacons have outscored their opponents 28-5 during their eight-game win streak.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 7 Wake Forest field hockey team used a stifling defensive effort and a brace by sophomore Sarah Mudd to take down No. 18 Louisville, 2-0, on Friday night at Trager Stadium.

With the win, Wake Forest (8-2, 4-0 ACC) holds its longest winning streak since 2011 and its first 4-0 start to ACC play since 2005.

Over the eight-game streak, the Demon Deacons are outshooting opponents 177 to 65, matching the Cardinals (5-5, 0-2 ACC) with five shots and three on goal this evening.

With Mudd's penalty corner goal in the fourth quarter, the attack penalty corner group for Wake Forest has scored at least once in every contest over the win streak and has now scored 15 of the Demon Deacons 33 goals.

Off a fantastic individual effort and assist from junior midfielder Faye Janse, Mudd scored the first goal of the game. It marked Mudd's third tally of the season, all coming in the last five games. It was Janse's second assist of the season and sixth point overall.

With the first penalty corner for either team coming with 3:47 left in the game, Wake Forest made the most of the opportunity as Lena Keller found Mudd at the back post for her second goal of the game.

Back-to-back ACC Defensive Player of the Week Ellie Todd was lights out in the cage again for Wake Forest, totaling three saves. With 22 saves across the last three matches, Todd has raised her season total to 35 saves, ranking second in the conference.

How It Happened
  • Both teams settled into the game in the first quarter with sophomore forward Lauren Storey managing the only shot which was blocked by a Louisville defender.
  • It didn't take long for the Deacs to get on the board in the second quarter as the Wake Forest offensive pressure provided the breakthrough goal.
    • With just under 10 minutes to play in the quarter, junior midfielder Faye Janse got the ball on the right wing of the circle. She spun her way through two defenders before centering the ball, finding the stick of sophomore Sarah Mudd who scored to give the Deacs the lead.
      • The goal marked Mudd's third goal of the season which have all come in the last five games.
  • Wake Forest held the 1-0 lead going into the break.
    • The Deacs did not allow a shot for Louisville in the first half.
    • Wake Forest tallied four shots including two on goal, coming from Brenna Campagna and Mudd.
  • Neither team managed a shot in the third quarter as through 45 minutes of play Wake Forest still had held the nationally-ranked Cardinals without a shot.
  • Thirty seconds into the fourth quarter Louisville nearly tied the game but after a review the initial goal was reversed and Wake Forest maintained its 1-0 lead.
  • With just under 11 minutes to play, senior goalie Ellie Todd came up big in goal, saving a potential game-tying goal right in front of the net, helping the Deacs hold onto the one-goal lead.
  • Wake Forest earned the first corner of the game for either team with 3:47 left in the game.
    • Mia Montag inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Lena Keller laid it off to Mudd at the far post and she guided it in for her second goal of the game.
  • With the Deacs leading 2-0 with just over three minutes to play in the game, Louisville earned their first penalty corner of the game. With the help of blocks from both Ava Moore and Storey, the Demon Deacons prevented the Cardinals from getting on the board again.
  • As the clock ticketed down, Todd had to make one more save to maintain her shutout.
  • Wake Forest claimed its seventh victory of the season, winning 2-0 against No. 18 Louisville.

Quotables
"
That was a hard-fought win. I'm extremely proud of the players being able to fly into Louisville, play a very talented Louisville team, and come away with a victory. We knew that our opportunities were going to be limited so I'm really proud of our team in converting the two opportunities that we did. It's a challenge every night in this league and we have so much respect for the opponent each time we play. We're continuing to learn how to win and how to play. We're excited to be back home on Sunday and enjoy the next few weeks on our own turf." – Head Coach Jen Averill
