No. 17 Demon Deacons Set for Second Road Test in Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- The No. 17 Wake Forest women's soccer team (4-1-0, ACC 0-0-0) will travel south to face the College of Charleston Cougars (1-2-1, CAA 0-0-0) for the fourth time in program history on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.

Last Time Out
- Wake Forest earned its fourth-straight shutout home victory with a 1-0 win over the USF Bulls last Thursday night at Spry Stadium.
- The Demon Deacons battled the Bulls from the very beginning, as USF recorded the first shot of the contest in the 9th minute.
- Wake Forest got their first look of the game in the 14th minute, as Sythe set up senior Hannah Johnson for a header that sailed just over the bar.
- Freshman Kylie Maxwell recorded her first of five shots on the evening in the 21st minute, but it went wide.
- The Demon Deacons created another prime scoring opportunity in the 31st minute, as Maxwell's shot off of a corner was saved by the USF goalkeeper.
- Amaral recorded her 60th career save in the 37th minute to keep the Bulls off the board.
- Wake Forest maintained 65 percent possession; however, both teams remained scoreless at the break.
- Both squads continued to battle out of the break, with Wake Forest outshooting USF 3-1 inside the opening ten minutes of the half.
- The Deacons recorded the breakthrough in the 69th minute as Sythe scored directly from the corner flag. This marked her fifth goal of her career and her second of the season.
- Senior Taryn Chance saw another incredible scoring opportunity with a wide-open net in the 76th minute, but the USF defender stepped in to block the shot attempt.
- The Demon Deacons kept heavy pressure on the South Florida keeper, recording three consecutive shot attempts in the 84th minute, but were unable to find the back of the net.
- Despite a push from the Bulls in the final minutes, the Deacs held on for the clean sheet victory.
- Over the 90 minutes, the Deacs outshot the Bulls 18-to-8 and controlled 62 percent of possession.
- Senior Hannah Johnson made her 50th career appearance while freshman Allie Flanagan made her first career start.

Scouting the Cougars
- College of Charleston is 1-2-1 to begin the season, with a 0-1 record at home and 1-1-1 on the road. The team was picked second in the conference preseason polls and had five players selected to the Preseason All-CAA team.
- The Cougars are led by head coach Christian Michner, who has led the program to a record of 107-139-28 in his 16 seasons with the Cougs.
- In 2024, Senior Emma Wennar led the Cougars with 63 shots and 29 shots on goal and was second on the team with 6 goals, 7 assists and 19 points. So far this season, the 2024 ALL-CAA First Team recipient leads the team with two goals and four assists through four games. Prior to her time with the Cougars, she was a member of the 2023 NCAA College Cup Team with the Clemson Tigers.
- Redshirt senior Faith Slimmer led the team in 2024 with nine goals and eight assists, as well as tallying 1.227 minutes. A two-time CAA Offensive Player of the Week, Slimmer scored two game-winners during the year and recorded a hat trick against Charleston Southern. The Petersburg, N.J. native scored her first goal of the season during the team's 3-0 clean sheet against Houston Christian last Thursday.
- Between the posts for the Cougars is sophomore Ainsley Chunn, a native of Mt. Pleasant. As a freshman, Chunn played in six games and started once, as well as made five saves in her collegiate debut against UNCW. In 2025, she started all four contests for the Cougs and made 15 total saves.
- The Demon Deacons hold a 3-0-0 record against the Cougars, with two wins at home and one on the road. Across the series, the Deacs have outscored the Cougars 8-3.
- Their most recent meeting was in 2018, where Wake Forest earned a 3-2 double overtime victory at Spry Stadium. Alumni Giovanna Demarco and Estelle Laurier recorded a goal and an assist apiece, while Peyton Perea delivered the game-winner in the 101st minute.
- Wake Forest's lone road victory in the series came in 1998, when the Deacs opened their season with a 2-0 shutout victory at College of Charleston.
