This marks his third ACC weekly honor after being named to the Doubles Team of the Week with Luca Pow two weeks before his first Freshman of the Week nod.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season, Wake Forest men's tennis standout freshman Mees Rottgering has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The honor marks Rottgering's third ACC weekly recognition of the year after previously being named ACC Doubles Team of the Week alongside Luca Pow following opening weekend play before earning his first Freshman of the Week accolade in late January.
Rottgering played a pivotal role in Wake Forest's undefeated weekend, helping the Demon Deacons to victories over Queens (7-0), NC Wesleyan (7-0), No. 6 Baylor (4-2) and Coastal Carolina (4-0).
Against Queens on Friday, the freshman earned a straight-set victory on court two, defeating Noe Villen, 6-4, 6-2, while also pairing with Shah for a dominant 6-0 doubles win.
He followed that performance with one of the biggest wins of his young career Sunday against No. 6-ranked Baylor, avenging Wake Forest's loss to the Bears at ITA National Team Indoors the previous weekend. Rottgering, ranked No. 59 nationally, cruised past No. 39 Zsombor Velcz on court two, 6-2, 6-2, to help secure the 4-2 team victory.
Later that day against Coastal Carolina, Rottgering moved up to court one and delivered another commanding performance, defeating Christopher Norlin, 6-1, 6-2. He also teamed with sophomore Conrelius Shalmi for a 6-3 doubles win over Norlin/Fernandes to clinch the doubles point against the Chanticleers.
Cementing himself as one of the top freshmen in the country, Rottgering improved to 9-2 in collegiate dual match play and now owns three ranked victories this season.
With the honor, Rottgering becomes the first freshman in the conference to earn three weekly accolades this season as Wake Forest continues its strong start to the spring campaign.
