Wake Forest Returns to ACC Play at Virginia Tech

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Searching for its fourth-consecutive victory, the Wake Forest men's soccer team resumes ACC action Sunday, Sept. 13, traveling to Thompson Field to take on Virginia Tech at 6 p.m.

Wake Forest enters the contest with a 4-1-1 overall record (1-0-0 ACC) after opening league action with a 6-1 victory over Duke before following with a 3-0 win over USC Upstate on Tuesday. The Demon Deacons have now won three-consecutive matches, outscoring opponents 10-1 during that span and recording a pair of clean sheets.

The Deacs enter Sunday having scored 14 goals through six matches while allowing just four. Their plus-10 goal difference ranks second in the conference heading into the weekend. Wake Forest has also outshot its opponents 102-76 and holds a 40-29 advantage in shots on goal.

Wake Forest's balance has been a defining characteristic of its attack early this season. Nine different players have scored at least one goal while 12 separate Demon Deacons have recorded an assist. Tate Lorentz leads the team with seven points (2G, 3A), followed by Jeffrey White and Joel Torbic with six apiece (2G, 2A Each).

In goal, Jonah Mednard has started all six matches and owns an ACC-best .840 save percentage with a 0.71 goals-against average. He has made 21 saves while helping Wake Forest record three shutouts.

MATCHUP NOTES

Sunday marks the 31st all-time meeting between Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, with the Demon Deacons holding a 25-3-2 advantage in the series.
- Wake Forest is 8-2-2 all-time in Blacksburg and has won each of the last two road meetings with the Hokies (2018 & 2022).
- The Deacs are 8-0-1 against Virginia Tech during the Bobby Muuss era, including six-consecutive wins in the series since the 2019 meeting.
- Wake Forest has won its last four meetings with Virginia Tech, including a 2-1 victory in the most recent matchup on Oct. 19, 2024.

RECENT FORM

Wake Forest has won three-consecutive matches following its lone loss at Akron on Aug. 28.
The three-match winning streak includes a 1-0 road victory at Bowling Green, a dominant 6-1 win over Duke and a 3-0 victory over USC Upstate.
- Wake Forest has outscored its opponents 10-1 during its current three-match winning streak.
The Deacs' six-goal performance against Duke was their largest offensive output against the Blue Devils in series history and their most goals in an ACC match since scoring six against Clemson in 2022.
Wake Forest followed the Duke performance with another complete outing Tuesday against USC Upstate, controlling 67 percent of possession and finishing with an 18-6 advantage in shots.
Mason Sullivan and Joel Torbic both scored against USC Upstate, giving each player goals in back-to-back matches.
- Torbic recorded a goal and an assist in each of the last two games for six total points over the last week, putting him tied for second on the team with Jeffrey White.

SENIOR DYNAMIC DUO

Seniors Tate Lorentz and Jeffrey White continue to headline the balanced Wake Forest attack.
Lorentz leads the team with seven points on two goals and three assists, while White has six points on two goals and two assists.
The two have combined for four goals and four assists through the opening six matches, with both recording a brace during that span.
They were instrumental in Wake Forest's 6-1 victory over Duke, with Lorentz scoring twice and White recording two assists.
Lorentz now has eight goals, eight assists and 24 points in his Wake Forest career following his assist against USC Upstate, while White has six goals, seven assists and 19 career points.

DEFENSIVE SOLIDARITY

Wake Forest has allowed just four goals through six matches and owns a 0.67 goals-against average.
Jonah Mednard has started every match in goal, making 21 saves with an .840 save percentage.
- He has recorded two individual shutouts, while Wake Forest has three team clean sheets this season.

Since the start of the 2015 season, Wake Forest has collected 163 wins, tied for the most in NCAA Division I men's soccer with Indiana, followed by Clemson (153), Georgetown (151) and Stanford (146).
Wake Forest has also earned 120 home wins since 2015, 13 more than any other Division I program.
